I didn't even think of that until a couple of seconds ago and saw that you are in France.

I spent most of my life in the USA. It's an easy mistake to make.

Posted my setup a few weeks ago but today made a huge change. I had been looking for a higher-end vintage automatic to replace my Pro-Ject Carbon DC with Ortofon 2M Blue. I tend to fall asleep while listening to my system and decided I should get an automatic to avoid breaking a stylus, and also so my girlfriend's unsteady hands would feel more comfortable cuing up a record.

I had been looking for an Technics SL-1200 for awhile but the price on a clean model has reached absurd levels. Meanwhile, a local turntable repair shop had this gorgeous unit for sale for a few weeks and finally decided I wanted to bite the bullet before someone else snatched it up. Got a nice combo deal with a new Ortofon 2M Black, and ended up paying barely more than the price of the cartridge for both even before the credit for trading in the Pro-Ject. Everything works perfectly and in excellent condition.

It's a Mitsubishi DP-EC1. From what I've found, it was Mitsubishi's TOTL turntable starting in 1976. Price when new was somewhere around $500 in 1976-era dollars. Fully automatic direct-drive with an aluminum plinth. It sounds fantastic.

@MyPetSasquatch that is a VERY aesthetic table, esp. with the Black cart. Congratulations.

Thanks! Yeah I wasn't sure when I first saw the pictures if it was just a painted MDF plinth, but after doing some research and finding out it was metal, I was sold. I do like the "all black everything" aesthetic. I never loved the silver/gray aesthetic of a lot of vintage tables, so this was a nice surprise.

My hilarious setup. A VPI Classic 2 with Ortofon Bronze which is surely being bottlenecked by the cheapo Onkyo receiver, and perhaps the B6s as well. These pieces will be replaced, but a combination o the black Friday deal with the fact of them being discontinued led me to jump on the turntable and save the other upgrades for later.

Coming from a Project Debut carbon there were a few notable differences. Much quieter background - even on the records I haven't bothered to clean yet. And in the opening bass notes of Gorillaz's Plastic Beach I was hearing a clarity to the bass I had never heard before, and I've listened to this album quite a lot. Makes me very excited to hear with a better system.

Only a few noteable differences from the ProJect?

Heh, I haven't been able to devote much time to critical listening yet, but those were the things that jumped out at me. Suffice it to say I am more engaged in the music now. I am still noticing that it does sound a bit "congested" in some louder rock/metal passages where there is a lot going on - things like Godspeed You Black Emporer or MONO. This is the best way I can put it; my ability to describe what I am hearing is not great yet. I am assuming this is because of the receiver, but what do I know.

It can definitely convey the black background of clean vinyl. The VPI has made me a lot more picky about my records because I can hear more of the flaws, but I can also hear more when the flaws are absent.

Play around with tracking force and VTA if you haven't. Don't be afraid to experiment. There shouldn't be any congestion, at least compared to the Debut.

Yeah. I do have the Mobile Fidelity release of Carole King's Tapestry and I was able to quickly compare between the ProJect and VPI before I had to send the former back. Was really eye (ear?) opening.

I did have to do a bit of tweaking when I received the unit. One of the screw-in weights that attaches to the tonearm came off during shipment and the whole thing was leaning way to the right. By adjusting the counterweight in the back I was able to get it level, and I adjusted VTA until I eyeballed the arm sitting parallel to the record. I'm sure this can be tweaked further, but I am moving in a month, so I will save that for then.

Unfortunately I don't own another version to compare at the moment, but I love it. And Is easily the best version I've heard.

Congestion could be from both the Onkyo and the ELACs, but it's definitely worth adjusting the turntable to see if that helps.

Minor problem... Left the belt at @drfindley house. Will try @brencho suggestion - a shoelace - in the meantime.

I bet that sounds as good as it looks!

Going down the "upgrade main vinyl" rig path myself right now ... and there are several VPI units on my list ...

    Congrats!

Got back home late last night, and spinning vinyl was a like a breath of fresh air. I only had enough energy to spin one side of an ol' DeBarge album.

I installed the Phoenix Engineering Eagle PSU and Roadrunner tach an hour ago. In my mind, the vinyl rig is now set for a good long time. Time to sit back and let the afternoon melt away. For me, listening to this set up, I feel the Gauravidian's are through the roof.

That rig feels like it must be fantastic sounding
The audio gear is matched beautifully.

But talk to me about that Hibiki! :)
