Wow, I'd gotten into the thread before but didn't read the whole thing. After seeing all those turntables I feel like I owe somebody some money. Thanks for making me read through it, now I won't have the money to retire by 65 now I want to buy an obscenely expensive turntable though...

How does this version sound? I'm on the fence between this and an original Canadian Latent Recordings pressing. Ghostly awesome sound, I totally agree.

Thanks to a very thoughtful gift from @JoshMorr I have kick-started my vinyl addiction collection. I don't have the means to play it yet but I promise when I do get a table it'll be the first thing I spin. Thanks man

If you enjoy this album, this master is really a step above the digital master:

Following up here as it seems more appropriate, it seems to strike the balance between treble and detail for the drums and guitar vs vocal sibliance.

Also ponied up for some Analog Productions LPs, they're pretty impressive.

Time Out is more detailed, yet dead quiet.

I have an '80s reissue of Time Out and the AP release smokes it. Of course, it should given the price and the fact it's at 45 RPM, but I was very pleased nonetheless.

Currently listening to a 1995 reissue of A Love Supreme. That's one I should get the AP for.

Continuing my tour of "Jazz records even people who don't like jazz own", I'm listening to the mono re-release of Kind of Blue from a few years back. I've really been into mono lately. There's something about the directed focus of it, like the music is coming straight at me like a steam train. I love it. This re-release sounds excellent, KoB is an album that should be heard in mono in my opinion. The stereo of course has great music on it but the mix is so perfectly balanced in mono.

What release did you pick up? I've often thought it would be an excellent mono album.

Other records to consider that have blown my mind:
    - Mingus - Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
    - Duke Ellington - Ellington Indigos
    - Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain

    Jazz records I've loved:
    - Ike Quebec - Blue & Sentimental
    - Getz/Gilberto - Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto
    - Wes Montgomery/Jimmy Smith - Further Adventures of Jimmy and Wes

That's true, thought here are a lot of music that were released as mono, and may have been rechanneled into fake stereo, but end up sounding best in single channel, for a number of reasons.

Miles Ahead, Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely, the early Beatle albums until Sgt. Pepper, Surrealistic Pillow. Opens up a whole new world, and alternate, usually better mixes if the artists checked out the mixes that way.

@drfindley This is the 2013 Columbia Legacy issue. AFAIK all the other big reissues of this album have been in stereo, I'm not sure at what point Columbia stopped printing the mono issues. The original two-eye monos go for big money. Until now I've been using a rip of an original two-eye as my go to, thankfully now I can hear it on vinyl.

I'm a huge Miles fan, and I picked up a lot of the MFSL releases (except KoB since theirs was stereo), including Sketches of Spain, Sorcerer, In A Silent Way, and Jack Johnson. I agree that Sketches of Spain is a really special record. Some of the most emotional playing Miles ever put on record. I also have some older issues of a few of his earlier records, like Miles Ahead.

Speaking of MFSL, their silver label issue of Ellington at Newport absolutely pops with energy. Spectacular performances and a really nice reissue. And not jazz, but I've really been enjoying their Bob Dylan reissues, again many in mono. The bass on the mono John Wesley Harding hits you right in the chest, it's really something.

@Wfojas Absolutely agreed about some records just being made for mono. And I would say The Beatles records through Sgt. Pepper are all better in mono, especially Help, Revolver, and Sgt. Pepper. Surrealistic Pillow is completely unlistenable in stereo to me.

Jazz records for non jazz listeners should also include Oliver Nelson's The Blues and the Abstract Truth, Horace Silver's Songs for My Father, Cannonball Adderly's Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.

And let's not forget Headhunters, perhaps the most accessible jazz for non-jazz fans album.

John Wesley Harding is also good in mono, though I prefer Nashville Skyline in Stereo. I also remember Charlie Mingus Ah Um sounding different in the mono mix, though either mixes should be a superb starter to jazz newbies.

I have a friend who collects all the vinyl releases of Kind of Blue, and he is up to sixteen now, last I checked. And the original six eye stereo is first, the six eye mono second for sound.

I've only heard Ah Um in mono, also from a vinyl rip.

Is Nashville Skyline even available in mono? If so, is it true mono or just a folddown? I thought Dylan stopped with mono after JWH.

By the way, about this KoB reissue. First, I need to correct something. The 2013 mono release was a numbered Record Store Day release. This is a 2014 repress. Same mastering, same plates, same package, no numbering. It's not a fancy audiophile reissue. It's not at 45 RPM. It doesn't have a big banner on the top of the cover or a beautiful booklet accompanying it. But it sounds fresh and vital and there are times where it feels like you're in the room with the band.

And my bad on the slip of the tongue, saying two eye instead of six eye. IIRC reading from interviews, the band was involved with the mono mix for KoB, not so for the stereo. Or at the very least a lot of time was spent on the mono and less on the stereo. This is true of a lot of records before stereo really took firm hold of the marketplace in 1968. Of course that doesn't mean that all albums where the artist was involved in the mono mix but not the stereo sound better in mono. I prefer the stereo mix of Blonde on Blonde despite Dylan taking meticulous care with the mono mix and not caring about the stereo. I also prefer the stereo of the White Album, even though The Beatles took equal time mixing the album in both mono and stereo (and there are significant differences to those two versions, it's worth owning both).
