SO, I got my Elears in today. Their declared value for customs & insurance purposes came to about $890 CAD. I live in BC right now, so a 12% tax on that would be $108, but I paid about $128.

In short, if you're ordering nice headphones from the states, be aware that you'll pay GST+PST (if you live in a province that has PST), along with probably a flat $20 or so. I'm Albertan and tried to argue that I shouldn't have to pay PST, but got dinged for it anyways, so that trick won't work either.

You should not be charged more than that. If you have unexpectedly high fees, it's probably because whoever was in the custom's office that day decided that your headphones counted as consumer electronics, which can be subject to additional fees and taxes.

If this occurs, you can submit a dispute and emphasize that headphones (with or without a microphone) are exempt from any additional duties to get rebated.

Or if it was sent by non-priority via UPS or FedEx, in which case they charge brokerage... which will probably be close to $100 all said and done, plus taxes, plus whatever other processing fees they can wrangle. I recently had some speaker come in, valued at $184. Total charges to receive the parcel? $87

Yeah, I forgot to mention that as well. You're not obliged to pay brokerage fees, especially if they're mailed in after a drop-off. You'll have to go to their office and say you'll clear customs by yourself. If UPS/FedEx insists you have to pay brokerage fees, they're basically committing a crime and this website outlines the process you should follow.
    http://trueler.com/2010/09/13/ups-brokerage-fees-total-scam-fraud-cheating-avoid-it/

So whenever possible, use USPS as a shipping service, as they hand off to Canada Post at the border, and you won't get brokerage fees.

There's many horror stories about people being charged more in total brokerage fees+shipping+taxes+duties than what they actually paid for the product. Even worse is buying off Ebay, since Pitney Bowes has the audacity to charge you deposits for fees that are easily avoidable.

Here's how FedEx gets you: They deliver the package to your door, no fees or anything, and the delivery guy has no knowledge whatever. Several weeks later, you'll get an invoice in the mail. Now because you've already accepted the item, there's no option to declare/broker yourself because it's already done.

Also, stealth pointer for the Makoyi loaner thread: http://www.superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/wolf-ear-makoyi-loaner-canada.3705/
I'd really like to get another couple guys to check out this amp!

This is what they tried to do when I loaned my Sony ZX2 to @thegunner100. He sent it back via FedEx and two weeks later I get an invoice for $50, no fault of his of course. Have tried to call their brokerage multiple times to dispute it, I've either been put on permanent hold or told I'd get a call back (which never comes). Pitiful.

I'm in Cornwall, Ontario (was in Toronto prior).

My current gear list is pretty small at the moment: UERM, HD650 // GOV2+

And yes, always try to use USPS/ Canada Post whenever possible. If you are close to a boarder you can also use a border shipping agent that help save on shipping (Kinek, shipnshop, CBI USA, etc).

It's really unfortunate no one has a Yggdrasil for loan - I would love to be able to test it against my Gungir Multibit...

Hey, I guess the first thread about Canadian Friends I made a long time ago died within 2015. As I see you have me on the list, then I assume you peeked at the previous thread to fill out the initial spots :D Nicely done @barelyincollege (can I call you BiC?).

As stated, I am in Vancouver. I have HD800, HE-6 (stock), LCD-2, lots of mid-fi closed and open cans, some electronics to drive them and a variety of sources.

Good to see you folks all here :D

    Hello from Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

I love computers, gadgets and music, so here I am.

Dipping my toe into the headphone game with a Schiit Fulla 2 and a couple pairs of lowly Phillips SHP9500's one pair with Brainwavz HM5 velour pads and the other with Brainwavz HM5 pleather pads.

    My wallet is already weeping.

Turn back while you still can! I went from an FiiO E10k and HD598's to owning a Vali 2, a Bifrost Multibit, and the Elears in less than two years, it's horrible!

(Welcome, and hope you enjoy yourself!)
