I have a bunch (almost all) of my wav files in folders by album name. The file titles are track name. I need to get all the file names in track order, so need to add 1,2,3 etc. in front of track name.

I suppose I could "convert" these files an perhaps have the track number picked up form meta and inserted into the title via foobar 2k. Or if there is a bulk editor and script that would work, I am all ears?

Or is there something I am doing wrong when transferring a folder from computer to portable device that causes it to dump all the folder files alphabetically vs by track number or the way I am viewing in the folder?

Thanks in advance for any solutions.

Mp3tag would be helpful. You can mass rename things according to a specific structure. In this case it would be track # - track title.wav or whatever extension you're using.

If the metadata is in the wav files, you can do that in Foobar no problem. Load the files in the playlist, highlight them, select " file operations -> rename to... " in the context menu. For file name pattern put

    %TRACKNUMBER% - %TITLE%

    And then hit run

Thanks guys, I tried foobar 2k and used that string, but failed to see the file operations and instead did convert. I will try it the Garns way, thanks.

Also wiill try the bulk editor above to see if that may be more efficient.

    Case is closed! YEA!

I second this. The UI is not immediately intuitive, but if you can get the hang of foobar settings, you should be able to handle this just fine, and it's pretty versatile. Only issue is that it lags when you load a folder with thousands of files, but I don't think most people here will run into that sort of problem.

Foobar is working great! I have to go through each artist anyway and convert a number of cds from flac to wav , so foo works fine both for renaming existing wav and converting flac without opening another interface.

dBpoweramp is your friend if you do this regularly (although it is not free) - I also own the PerfectTUNES suite and find the overall package pretty good value.

I also have the same issue for a few albums I had to convert from m4a. I have used mp3tag in the past and I’ll try that first.
