Damn it Josh, those are both awesome records! Fantastic choices...that is also probably one of my favorite Mingus albums :) You should get the 45rpm ORG pressing if you fall in love with it. That is the ULTIMATE listening experience for that album. Grundman mastering and superb quality pressing.

That's the version I bought...its amazing worth the extra cost. I also bought the Coltrane in the ORG 45 pressing. Super stuff. I have been using Elusive Disc as they have the best information about which pressing you are ordering.

Any Music Matters fans here? Over at SH forums there's a bit of hoopla over the current state of the company... basically rumor has it they seem to be running themselves into the ground and just DGAF anymore. I have only a few MM titles but they are all great, hope these don't become unobtanium in the near future.

I love Music Matters - hope the rumors of their demise are greatly exaggerated. They have done a fantastic job on all of the Blue Note masters that I own (which isnt a lot). Lets see if we can hoard them before extinction.

I'm a huge MM fan :) I have the complete 45rpm series and a bunch of the 33rpm series. One of the absolute best labels around that take care of every step of the way. If they do close shop, I would be thankful for their work so far and treasure what I have. I already do!

    Nothing is permanent...

Just pulled out Coltrane's Lush Life after getting it from Barnes and Noble. image.jpeg God damn I love his tone in this one. As much as I love crazy songs like Giant Steps and his later avante-garde nutzo live performances, I cannot get over how fantastic Coltrane wails on slower songs. Lush Life also has a fantastic history, being written by the guy who wrote a lot of Basie's famous tunes. I love hearing about Strayhorn's life because damn, he was a musical genious.

Next up for purchase is everything I can afford by Thelonius Monk.

BioniclePhile, that is such a great album! You are going for some great jazz classics! I have a boat load of Thelonious Monk...please do post which ones you pick up.
As an aside, what pressing did u pick up from Barnes and Noble? One of the best ones I have heard are the old DCC (Hoffman Remaster) and the 200g Analogue Productions Reissue:

Pick your vinyl pressings carefully from the best sources, mastering and pressing quality :)

Well feck, now I have to worry about which pressings I'm getting? What is this tomfoolery! I'll have to check it later, but how do I figure out which masters of what are good?

Anyone snag the Ryuichi Sakamoto - Revenant soundtrack on vinyl? I've been a sucker for releases like this for too long and it looks like quite a bit of notes about surface noise on Discogs. Had a similar experience with the Milan releases for Birdman and It Follows. The music itself sounds very nice, I'm just afraid to pull the trigger.

*Edit* It looks like GZ presses these Milan releases :(

You would research and kinda figure out if the vinyl mastering is worth buying. A good resource is the Steve Hoffman forums.

Record buying is getting a bit out of control over here, but totally necessary and satisfying.

Panda Bear vs Grim Reaper box set was a lucky find on my end. One of my fav albums from 2015

So to answer my own question about the Ryuichi Sakamoto - Revenant soundtrack...

It took two tries because the first time around I got 2x side C/D's (LOL!). The pressing is not great with regards to surface noise; I can't tell from the deadwax if it is GZ's handiwork or not but the format of the code seems different than the It Follows soundtrack. I had/have 3 copies of side C in my possession and all three exhibit surface noise in varying degrees throughout.

The mastering and the music are AWESOME however, it's up there. At least grab the CD.

Picked this up today, these are hard to come by in good shape at a reasonable price. This is my favorite PF album but I forgot how different the vinyl is mastered. I think it's the mastering, or maybe the pressing, I'll have to do a little research. It's a mixed bag. The vinyl is clean both visually and sonically, but there seems to be heavy limiting on this pressing, you can hear it ducking on loud transients, almost pumping. The CD is much better in this regard. At the same time, some of the synth work grabs at you, almost like claws reaching out of the speakers, gripping your chest and pulling you towards the speakers, it's physical! SO much better than the CD. Need to take this to Gaurav's for a listen...;)

Just picked this up, still sealed. Beautiful music, sounds pretty lousy. There's some defects in the pressing, I'm not sure exactly how vinyl works in regards to distortion, but it sounds like a hot recording at times and the right channel distorts on bells and sibilance in some places. It's pretty bright too. It may be that the master tapes are already eq'd for film, which like the RIAA curve, you had to do something similar for. Or maybe it's a different curve since it's Nina Rota, maybe Italian mastering, I don't know. Very bright, very thin on the low end and very aggressive in the upper mids. Though, it's clear he wanted it to sound of the period, so perhaps it's mixed that way too. I'd love to see a proper remix/remaster of this, really lovely music (not to mention the best of the three movies... by far IMO)
