Sonova to Sennheiser as McDonnell Douglas to Boeing?

It's a shame to see Sennheiser's decline. But they've not released anything good since 2009 (if you don't count HD 800 S), Alex Grell left 5 years ago, and they could have had winners, e.g. a new version of the HE 60. Were it not for JAR they'd be moribund.

HAH, "moribund'''s not a word I'd heard in a very long time but yeah, that tracks. Seems like, at best, they're able to come close to matching past endeavours, but I do feel like things've taken a turn for the worse with their modern direction.

The Massdrop HD6XX is a steal. But after the HD800 it went downhill. Maybe some decent IEM releases over the years but that's it.

I know its not the same, but the cable that came with my CFA Fathom is a 4-wire ribbon style cable that I thought I'd hate because weird design, and SPC, but the ergonomics are actually quite nice. Sound wise it's more even than the CFA pure silver super litz.

I saw those. Time Stream cables I think they're called by Campfire? Not heard those ones specifically but while I cannot make any hard calls just yet because my sinuses are flooded... I forget how much more cables seem to matter for IEMs than headphones.

@gurubhai I'm giving myself time to grow properly accustomed to them. Just have them running out of the Piety for now but will give the MCTH a shot sooner or later. With how much fun these are I am beginning to question the value proposition of a lot of modern orthos, haha.

There are some aspects that these modern headphones seem to be better at and I use an umbrella term, modern resolution to refer to aspects such as, bass definition, separation, imaging precision, black-ground etc. Outside those aspects, I do think Yamaha and Sennheiser solved headphones back in the 20th century.

@EagleWings That's why we mod the vintage orthos, to improve tthese aspects you call modern resolution. I won't be satisfied with a headphone if it couldn't do those things.

@Wilewarer the former. With the 3+ I had to flip the switch a bunch, wiggle it laterally to re-center image. Piety and Unity are fine now, I'm just never touching gain settings unless I have to.

@Sqveak ugh, likely. Hate it. No real reason to use lower gain for me unless I try with IEMs. Likely never going to now haha.

Right, that's what I was thinking. I'm gonna be quadruply sure and email schiit about it though. The specs align and the wallwart is rated for 3x the amperage so it should theoretically be super safe. I know that should work but I'm fully in cover my ass mode haha.

Unless your amp runs super toasty, most electrolytics will run more than a decade. Unless they're extra crappy, that is. Most will bulge up and you'll start hearing noise at 2x the AC frequency of your mains. Then it's time to swap the suckers out.
