If you're thinking D3, I'd definitely recomend the D3s. It was one time when Nikon made some really good upgrades with the "s". The D3S remains a very capable camera, and I still find myself shooting alongside it at many events. Good call @adpo

If you like feeling a real camera in hand, there is nothing like the professional series bodies. Besides, you can use them driving nails when you're not shooting. :)

So, as they say on the internet, I bought the Sony a6000. And immediately went into buyer's remorse over not buying the a6300. But hey, prices are higher here, and really spent as much as I could afford all I had.

Mixed feelings. The thing is certainly nice, feels good to hold, is not badly laid out once one gets used to the positioning of things. On the other hand, I point it at a picture of two playing cats, indoors, artificial light, and get a blur. I point the phone at them and get... a picture. Oh well, perhaps that is just one of the things that real cameras, if not in super-auto mode, are about.

So now I know that I need a faster lens, at least for indoor stuff. And then there's the lens I need for birds. And then....

Oh damn.... Can someone remind me how I got over this forever-spending thing with hifi, please! I had completely forgotten that it is part and parcel of owning an interchangeable-lens camera o_O

If you're not printing out in high res, bump up the ISO and just scale down the image in post. Works fairly well for less headaches indoors.

My photos are intended for my 24-inch monitor, nothing more. Though it is nice to be able to crop.

Hmmm... It's new-toy syndrome, I suppose. Instead of thinking, oh yeh, this looks great at posted-on-line size, I'm magnifying it to see what it looks like.

Hmmm... (2) I just plugged the camera into an hdmi-in on the monitor. It actually looks better this way. Maybe I need a new video card lol. Hmmm (2a) Oh, wow, this works in shooting mode too: I have a 24-inch viewfinder! Oh, wowwow... the camera shake at 210 (kit 50-210) when I think I'm holding still! And the difference the OSS makes when I touch the shutter button.

OK... I guess I'd better relearn photography here :D

A flashlight with good flood light, preferably with warm color does wonder for indoor photography. Way, way cheaper than having fast and bulky and expensive lens!

Well, having another pair of hands helping with the light is welcomed too...

....until you get into really lighting your shit. Then you can easily blow stupid amounts of money on lights, modifiers, triggering systems, gels, etc.

I will either pick up an S100/120 or RX100 I/II/III depending on my budget next month. The EM5 is a bit to bulky sometimes.

Pocket size is really important for me. Also close-ups and macro focusing matter. I read about Fuji's X70 but no. 28-70mm or 24-70mm focal length is something I need at least. The X10/20/30 series are good I think but just too bulky.

Manual zoom and manual exposure in a pocket size body even with a smaller sensor, yeah I am good.

    Thanks for your advice.

P.S. When I can afford that pro-lens with 12-35mm for my EM5 I am almost done. Maybe the 12-50mm might be nice but I prefer walking over zooming. 70mm or 80mm focal length is plenty in most cases for me.

I managed to get a good deal on a D500 (20% off, plus a Nikon cash-back rebate). Nikon nailed the ergo on this. Reminiscent of the D700 but with a deeper grip and snappier buttons. The AF thumb-stick is awesome. I am starting again with glass so I can just accomodate crop factor into my lens choices.

That feel when your camera store sends you the wrong lens though. Ordered a 24mm f1.8, received a 24-70mm f2.8E!

That D500 is a nice rig.

Too bad you can't keep the 24-70, nice lens to have in your bag as well!

Yeah, I know. An effective 35-105 would be just about perfect for me. As it stands the 24 is on backorder, so now I'm like one of those guys on youtube, fondling a new camera body to the sound of heavy breathing.

Congrats on the d500, I'll be looking forward to hearing what you think of it once you've got the 24.

In somewhat related news, I ended up selling my 135L and used the funds to get a Ricoh GR. I remember selling my last one a few years ago and it seems like the prices on them have basically stayed the same. This is probably the only digital camera I know of that's held it's value this well, outside of some hard-to-find limited edition bodies and/or leicas.

I like that the a5000 is nowhere near as bulky and heavy as a DSLR or a superzoom P&S, but still wondering if I should have gone RX100.

Buyer uncertainty: I need a consumer therapist! :D

Why not both? I like something with a larger sensor if I know I'm going to be able to take photos slowly and lighting is subpar, but the RX100 is legitly good for more casual situations.

    Money.

And, as I may have said before, now I have a camera with interchangeable lenses, that means an immediate wish list. Just like hifi!

But I am pleasantly surprised at just how much I can do with the kit 16-50 (24-75 in 35mm terms). The 55-210 has hardly been used at all.

Olympus EM5 I has the "big sensor." The RX100 is for casual shots. It fits in my pocket.

I've always wanted to get into photography just as a hobby, nothing serious. Been thinking lately of buying a nice beginner camera and taking some hikes (have a lot of scenic trails around where I live).

What's a good starter camera that's not very expensive? I'm talking a few hundred bucks, maybe less used. I know this hobby can get crazy expensive but I just want to tip my toes in for a bit, see if I like it. I see a lot of recommendations on other sites for the Nikon d3300.

M43, compact zoom and look at Olympus and Panasonic. The used and refurbished deals right now are amazing. (The EM10 mark I and EM5 mark I can be had for little money for example.)

If you want a DSLR the Nikon 3200/3300/3400 with kit lens or 18-70mm used is a bargain.

For compact the Sony RX100-series is amazing but also consider the Canon G-series with one inch sensor.

The RX100 lineup is great. I've gone through the I, II, and now IV. I sold my earlier models and upgraded as I went along.

How is battery life with the RX100 in your experience?
