    Probably replaced the headband with an HE-500/HE-5/HE-400 headband possibly due to the original one being broken, and tried to remove the name on the headband by scratching it off.

    Or a review sample that wasn't supposed to be resold. Have seen that a time or two.

    Actually, the scratching of the SN would align with that, but not the scratching on the model number on the other side. Maybe your theory holds more water.

    Another situation is it could have been stolen (somewhere along its trail of ownership). I know from one of my friends who worked in a pawn shop for a while that they get a lot of stuff with identification scraped off.

    Alternatively it could have been refurbished, which someone could have figured would have hurt it's resale value more than no SN, so they just took it off.
