Since my plan was to purchase the HD650 in a near future, maybe I should take this chance to join in on the drop. I don’t really mind if the only difference compared to the HD650 is the paint job and cable. Is it compatible with regular HD650 replacement parts and everything?

Yes everything is replaceable, the paint job and the cable are the only difference.

The materials used also seem to be different. The outer frame on the HD 6XX seems to be plastic, while the outer frame on the HD 650 is metal.

Considering the stock HD650 cable retails (when in stock) for $11, you aren't missing much with the MassDrop version of the cable. I think the only difference is the length (the stock cable is longer, I think).

    hello,
the first drop initially shipped with a four foot cable which was shorter than was specified. to their credit, Massdrop/Sennheiser shipped a six foot cable to those in the first drop at no additional charge. methinks this drop should have the longer cable.

Are you talking about the grills? I thought the HD 6XX had metal ones as well.

And the MD comes with pleb-grade 1/8" plug with adapter instead of audiopeel 1/4".

I can't say with total certainty that all the material elements are the same with both the 650 and 6XX, but I can say with absolute certainty that they appear to be the same-both have a "plastic...outer frame", at least on the pairs that I own. As @Delayeed says, the only difference is the paint job and cable.

Edit: As per @SSL's post above, the grills on both are metal and appear to be exactly the same. i.e., the "plastic" and metal parts are the same on both 650 and 6XX:rolleyes:

    Stock 650s come with a 10 foot cable terminated to 1/4", 6XX (both 4' and 6') are terminated to 1/8" w/ 1/4" adapter.

good to know. a 4' cable is pretty useless, except for mobile, and the 65o ain't a mobile headphone, so what's the point? Well, looks like it will come with a 6' cable, which isn't bad, but still a little short.

Of course a 1/4" plug is only ~$5 at markertek, so $5 and a soldering iron can resolve the plug. For $11 one can have the "full sized" cable, and probably sell the other one to recoup the cost; of convert it to balanced.

That said, I challenge anyone to distinguish the difference of this cable terminal 1/8" with an adapter or directly 1/4". I'd pay a billion dollars if anyone can in a DBT! :)

That and the fact that you can buy the 650 now for $300-$315 while the 6XX will cost $250 but take 5 or so months to ship.

Could you point that out in a pic? AFAIK, they are identical except for the paint job.

I may have made a mistake. Can't be certain without breaking things apart, but based on tapping the outer frame pieces (the painted ones) seem to be the same material.

I have a feeling the $50 increase in price is attributable to their mistake in the first run in which they accidentally packaged a shorter cable into the box and had to ship another cable for everyone.

Well hey the international shipping is free for the select countries so that offsets it a little compared to the first run.

Since the cable is $11 retail (shipped), it's probably ~$5 wholesale. Add $3 for shipping and I don't think you are at $50.

The price increase is probably related to a combination of profit for both companies, and a desire of sennheiser not to eat too much more into 650 sales. We're talking $375,000 more revenue for mass drop.

Wish they would do a HD600 Massdrop. Maybe fix a couple of things while there at it. Love my 650's, but sometimes the 600's fit the bill better.

I'm guessing that the $50 increase can be explained solely by ravenous demand. They may have paid more than $3 for shipping the replacement cables though as someone speculated above since they shipped them by UPS.

I got in on the first drop and bought a really nice cable in the same color as the headphones from Impact Audio. One could argue that adding that cable cost to a $250 6XX would put you at the current market price of the 650 anyway so might as well buy the 650. One could also argue that it's still saving money if you would have also bought the same upgraded cable for a 650.

Marvey stated at one time that the stock 650 cable is actually really good quality wire for the price and that the 6XX cable is not as good quality if I'm not mistaken. My stock 650 cable is still sitting in the unopened package so i haven't compared. I don't mind having a 1/8 cable but I'd rather just have the 1/4" to 1/8" adapter that I believe comes with the 650 so I don't have to change out cables every time I want to plug into 1/8".
