USB sounds more aggressive & mid-forward.. bass is muddier, more mid-bass-y. Upper mids are splashier.

Coax sounds more laid back, linear, cleaner.. tighter, faster mid-bass, sub-bass has better clarity.. upper mids are smoother. Better left/right separation, too.

Mids via coax are less gritty, 'exciting,' textured.. but linearity (mids in relation to the bass and treble), staging, smoothness, and cleanliness sounds more realistic to my ears. Treble is better via coax, too. Do note I'm using a fairly wack USB-to-SPDIF, too (cheapo Matrix USB-to-SPDIF converter, usb powered). I've never had USB issues on my (Lenovo T440p w/SSD HD) laptop, though.

I'd imagine the nice DDC transports Hands & others are using would really show the differences. Regen or Wyrd is probably a good idea, too.. but everyone already knows that.

Raspberry Pi with coax hat + Modi Multibit + Vali 2 = the ultimate budget desktop system.

Yep.. that Raspy+coax HAT is what I'm angling at, Daniel! Thinking about one of those halfway decent XMOS DDC converters that run about $200, as well. I don't think anything more is a worthwhile investment (from a value to performance perspective) for a Modibit. Raspy w/ coax hat is still cheaper (and probably better), I think!

Mine sounds good with my Digi+, but I'm very much looking forward to the coax hat that's being developed and beta tested here. Shut up and take my money!
