I think Mr. Moffat, who designed it, would disagree. Then again, he would say that you are right about the vast majority of DACs. And Cizx's point is taken. There's a reason D/S got invented. I am glad to have my iPhone sound decent, get good sound out of a Geek Out, etc.
Anyhow, I think @baldr would say the Yggdrasil is better!
Was there myself - Sweeping statement, but I definitely know how you feel, @TwoEars. Spent some time looking for a DAC/CD Player solution myself, which was solved by a 20 year old SF SFD-1.
As a owner of a slightly less crazy Gen II, the progress has been pretty minimal, I'm not sure this unit gives up much if anything on my old Gungnir Multibit. Granted $3800 1991 vs $1250 2016 shows we at least have gotten great sound cheaper.
True that. The Gungnir Multibit is very good and runs cooler and has USB etc. The Gungnir Multibit is probably my recommendation in the $1000 and change catergory for new DAC's at the moment. But the Gen Va is another beast altogether, from memory it's at least one level higher than the Gungnir Multibit. Possibly two.
