Japanese Black Triangle (Non-TO), this was the first edition of DSOTM released on CD, and was mastered from the same tape used for the highly regarded Pro-Use Japanese release from 1978. It's from a tape dub but has exceptional depth and a smooth, warm sound. Of all the digital releases, it sounds the most like vinyl. And...
The 24/96 stereo rip from the 2011 Immersion Blu-ray. It's brighter than the BT and more balanced and detailed. Not quite as addictive sounding but likely the best representative of the master tape.
That really helps, thanks. My dad was big into Floyd growing up and he's been bugging me to get their discog downloaded for him, but I always got lazy when it came to deciding on versions.
If you want to go the safe route you could always download the Doug Sax remasters from 1994, those all sound very good. I can point out individual releases that may sound better but as a general rule the Doug Sax remasters do all the albums justice.
Yep, couldn't sleep so I got up and downloaded the non-TO Sony master CD. I agree with your comments on the depth and smoothness, lovely issue. It's like all the benefits of a vinyl rip with none of the negatives.
