I'm unconvinced on the interpretation. My cat is positively terrified when I'm out for a longer period, so when I'm back he seems just so incredibly relieved that I hadn't forgotten him. (He may not have eaten at all for all day long, even if he had food available.) Not sure it's necessarily a "sociable" indicator, more a sense of relief borne from strong survival skills.
