@Torq I've yet to jump on the DAP train. Also despite 150-160 flights in 2016 I still haven't gone down the noise cancelling route either.
Seems like it's expensive to get something that works well?
Active NC isn't really necessary for flying ... it's just more convenient when traveling with people (that like to chat periodically) than taking properly isolating IEMs in and out all the time.
My Phone + QC20i works well enough in most cases. Do do proper ear-plugs. DAPs only have to be expensive if you're being picky AND have gotten proper isolation ... otherwise the benefit is lost to background noise anyway.
I like the MDR-1000X, but it's not my choice for travel - which is more about size than anything else. They'll give you better noise reduction (partly mechanical, partly the electronics) than the QC20i (which really just sort of rest in the ears and don't "seal" as such), but not enough for me to want to actually carry them on a flight.
Oh wait, I did already, back in about 2002 or 3. A Cowon thingy the size of half a brick. Expensive for back then. And yes, it did sound good too, but, in those days, phones sounded like *phones.*
