(all in my opinion, and as per my knowledge:)
Increased users and the associated changes that follow (that are mostly currently perceived as painful) must be weighed against what is being done for the community and I am sure that the donations to the site have also seen an upward trend because of a wider audience. Of course, this means more access to gear, more people sending gear to to top brass, etc
One solution could to the noise/lack of contribution from the gen pop could be allowing users to post only X times per month based on their contribution from the previous month.
I think things just snowballed over the last few weeks. With the time away from the forum and some changes, I hope things go smoother
Marv: "It's scary how 10 people are responsible for 99.9% of content. I don't really see a need for an open forum. I'm at the point where I am seriously thinking about shutting this forum down, considering how ineffective my pleas for better s/n came out."
Moat forums run on a small percentage of regulars. The rest are like the cloud on a mountaintop: it looks like it is the same cloud, but actually cloud is forming, cloud is going, all the time.
That's how it is. And people don't join forums in their Sunday best, looking for the code of behaviour.
One forum I frequent is apply-for-membership (I got in before that, of course ;) ). And yes, people are queueing up to join; trying, trying, and trying again.
Even then... who knows what they will post when they actually join.
