...Well, if you want your bookshelves /really/ efficient then you have to go in for lossy compression. Particularly with paper backs, you can get many times the number of books on the same shelf.
But a lot of people say that, even though the words are the same, they just don't feel the same. Especially for works of fiction
Bah! Just make your own like in olden days, cutting down trees with a straw. Once roughly shaped, use a bendy straw to carve the corners of the shelves.
