The HD650 is the longest standing piece of audio gear in my arsenal (by several years). I'm notorious for going through gear rapidly and selling/buying the same thing again. I've never sold the HD650s.

On the other hand, I've bought and sold both the HD600 and HD650 many times. But always regretted it! (Honestly, it's been more because of comfort, too hot in the office, wanting closed backs, etc.) The HD600 is my favorite piece of equipment though. I know the HD650 is better in ways, but it just can't touch the HD600 when it comes to string quartets.

imackler that is why I keep both 600 and 650 in the collection. Two 650s currently. Also sold 600 and 650 before ... now wont be caught without the twins in the house.

I'm still a bit grumpy about how hard it is to find a solid upgrade to the 650 without going near the rampant d-baggery of Focal. So many other headphones have fucked tonality or weird upper mid suckouts, or just plain old Beyer treble. I love my 650s, which probably deserve new pads soon, but it shouldn't be impossible to find good alternatives/upgrades that cost less than a car.

@Scubadude i actually have 2 pair of HD600 (home and office!) but thought about trading the home one for a HD650/HD6xx.

I have an emergency backup HD6xx in the cupboard. I don't have a problem, cough.

(Though they're not modded, so they may not sound quite as snappy)

@Kattefjaes I've yet to hear a modded pair. I wonder if my preference for the HD600 will change when i do. I already prefer the 650 w some genres.

@Kattefjaes ... problem? Certifiable condition yes, but not a problem. I have a lovely LCD2.2PF which I regard as a proper upgrade to the 650 but it comes with neck spasms as standard. You got me thinking about 650 mods again ... maybe I should give it a go. What are the top three (preferably reversible) mods?

Forget about reversible and go all-in. The easiest way is to search on here for the "KISS mod". If you hate it, parts are readily available to go back. Honestly, I was wary about taking cutters to mine, too- but it's quite liberating. I screwed up and chopped the wrong thing off once, as pictures were less plentiful then- but the world didn't end.

Oh, and they are amazingly easy to dismantle/reassemble, so you'll be all set when you need to replace worn parts!
