I'm in the middle of listening to 2. I think it's OK but I tend to like my free jazz a little less free - like early Ornette. I'm a musical relativist though. Describe what puts this up there in the top jazz you've heard for you.
@DigMe This space is a bit short to elaborate on the matter, however in general I love Vandermark and I'm amazed with how his output every year is so consistent in terms of intensity, curiosity and collaboration.
@DigMe In terms of DEK I think Elisabeth Harnik is just FANTASTIC. I feel she takes control and runs with her ideas and manages to get the other two to join her in what I hear as almost manic runs over the piano. There's a sense of urgency that I really enjoy on all three albums.
@DigMe Also, the way Didi Kern goes within the music and then steps out of it to go in a different direction is just exciting to follow.
But I'd say most essentially I love the unexpected, and these three albums are packed with just that.
