I'm waiting on real-world video game performance benchmarks before I get too giddy. Namely for Arma 3 and Guild Wars 2-- which are both heavily cpu dependent. Available specs do look very promising for the price point though.

Edit: Oh wow the stock cooler has RGB LED's. Will red make it OC higher?

I'm up for it. Time to bring down Intel and Nvidia's pricing. Hopefully VEGA is up for the task.

The only thing I'm "slightly" concerned about is the clock speeds. Stock this doesn't seem extremely impressive. Also important is the OC capabilities, let's see some benchmarks up so we can really hype them up.

I'm glad though, even though my last AMD CPU was a K2 in 1998, I'm stoked to see some competition with Ryzen. Intel has been sitting on a high horse for far too long.

    @chakku 8C/16T 3.6 GHz; you get a MOIST processor!

EDIT: @Grahad2 same link. Sorry, guess I need some sleep.

I haven't bought an AMD cpu in ages myself. As someone said it'll be nice if the CPU wars started up again. Intel has been mostly sitting on their laurels since AMD cratered.

Yep, even if you don't personally want to buy one, they need to be snapping at Intel's heels to help prevent gross market distortion. I really hope that AMD don't screw this one up.

I will eventually need to replace my 2010 vintage CPU, so worth keeping an eye out. Looks like an i7 7700K is currently the frontrunner for me at home..

Looks like Intel is still the way to go for gaming, which is all I really need my PC to be good at. But for productivity, the Ryzen looks awesome at a great priced. The overclocker in me wishes it had more headroom.

For 1440p and above gaming the Ryzen appears to be as good as any Intel. 1080p scores are puzzling though.

I think Ryzen makes sense going forward since the 8 core 1700 is a pretty good proposition and you don't lose that much FPS in gaming.

Well, yeah, at 1440p you're looking at GPU bottleneck, usually. That tells you little of the CPUs actual performance. Plus, in some games, like Black Desert Online (which I play and is horribly unoptimized), you'll see CPU bottlenecks in cities and the like at any resolution. Any good reviewer knows to do gaming benchmarks at a resolution that doesn't bottleneck the GPU.

Thing is, that's always the story people say, and it usually takes a good 3-5 years before that difference is realized. At that point, you're looking at a new build anyway. (I'm thinking back to experiences with the Core 2 Quad, Phenom x6, and so on.)

It was like people saying shader model 3.0 mattered on the Nvidia 6000 series GPUs. By the time games made use of it, those GPUs were long obsolete.

Maybe this will hold true if Intel or AMD don't make any massive performance gains. Been a slow, but steady, race since Sandy Bridge.

Process nodes are reaching the wall now and it's hard to make improvements as drastic as possible before (Zen aside, as that was catching up really). I'm still on a Ivy Bridge quadcore and I don't feel the need to upgrade actually. The only reason why I'm considering getting Ryzen is to help the only alternative x86 choice along and get a desktop up. (VIA is all but kaput)

I'm all about helping alternative choices, but I'm much more about getting the best performance for my needs. The 7700K at a lower price point than the 1700X makes more sense for me, since I primarily use my PC for gaming. My 2500K at 4.5GHz is finally showing its age in some situations.

Same reason why, as much as I'd like to use an AMD GPU, I seem to have bad luck with their drivers, and Freesync didn't work with all the games I played for some reason. That and the Fury's performance was disappointing relative to an OCed 980TI.

I suppose the gaming crowd will be best served by the likes of Ryzen 5, since less cores means more TDP per core so the frequencies should be higher.

Sure, if they can get the price down low enough on the R5, and if they can match Intel's clock speeds at bare minimum. Kinda tough, though, when the Kaby Lake CPUs come out of the box over 4GHz, can easily OC to upper-4GHz and sometimes 5GHz ranges, and tend to have higher IPC for a single thread at matched clocks vs Ryzen.

My bet is that the entire Ryzen line will be stuck in the upper-3GHz to low 4GHz range and never make up for gaming performance. Again, pricing here will be critical. Clearly the R7 line is not a good value perspective for gamers, but damn does it have strong suits elsewhere that make it appealing for other purposes.

It's good to have some competition in such a stagnant area. Whether that will effect Intel pricing who can say. IPC looks decent, but gaming-wise almost everything tends to be GPU bound anyway due to the consoles having having 8 low clock cores with an IPC at the Core 2 Duo level. Hopefully when DX12 is more widely adopted the higher core count will be of more value to customers in that space. It was interesting to see in the interview on anandtech that though the PC market is continue to contract, PC gaming market continues to grow.
