An afternoon in DIY e-stat land

@Cradon invited me to bring my Yggdrasil and go with him to Kerry's place today to listen to his Stax setups. Unfortunately we couldn't get a pair of 009s to try, but the 007 MKI's were there for us. I only did some very brief listening, so I'll let Craig comment on the sound if he wants to. I'll just say that this has been one of the best experience I've had with an e-stat setup. Both amps brought the 007 to life and gave it much body and weight to notes, which was unexpected of an e-stat. To make up for the lack of more detailed impressions, here are a few pictures:


Kerry's Super Symmetry Dynalo Mini - Someone told Kerry that he couldn't possibly fit the Dynalo into the size of a Cavalli Liquid Carbon. He took on the challenge and succeeded. Unfortunately we didn't get the chance to listen to it, but maybe at a future mini meet we will.


Blue Hawaii Kerry Edition - The DIY version of the BHSE, which should perform very similarly to the ones built by HeadAmp. This build is only one unit and combines both the amp and PSU.



DIY T2 - A legendary amp that I'm glad to have been able to see and hear in person. It sounded a bit better than the BHSE to my ears, and I wish we had a 009 around to listen to it with.

 

Sorry, I disagree. The T2/009 combo is phenomenal and one of the best in the headphone world, at least mine. I sold the 007 and haven't repurchased, but I might becasue it's also amazing with the T2.

My friend built Kerry's Super Symmetry Dynalo Mini, not sure there are any more yet. The case is very basic but I was thinking people here might enjoy it on a loaner tour?

Pictures fixed! It worked for me at home but did not work at work. I initially uploaded onto google photos, which probably required you to be signed into google to view. Now they're on imgur.

The only other time I've heard the 007 were with @bozebuttons' KGSSHV Carbon, and it was too long ago for me to remember how it sounded like. To me, the 007s are closer in tonality to the hd650s and the 009s closer to the hd800. I wasn't expecting such a meaty sound to the 007s and I was caught off guard. It's hard to say what I would have preferred without having both stax headphones side by side to compare.

That being said though, I believe that both the Blue Hawaii and T2 were tuned with the 007 in mind.

Me & Kerry are supposed to get together at some point to compare the Carbon to the T2/blue Hawaii.
I will also throw in My ES1 to the mix.

 

I have a couple PCBs for the Dynalo mini and I actually sourced the pots for the first run. When I get the funds/time to build it I can assure you it's going on a loaner tour.

The SMPS power supply means that it has no problem with 120V or 240V.

Which 007 version did you listened to? MK1?

I've never heard a T2, but heard the 009 and 007 MK1 on the BHSE some months ago, for me, 009 and 007 are competitve between them and a "taste preference", but once you take the price difference into the equation, they're not.
I preferred the 007, at twice the price I expect 009 to be better on everything, especially with an amp of BHSE caliber driving it.

 

Too bad you won't be around on Saturday at Torrance's Source AV for their electrostat bash.

I don't know anyone here bringing anything other than milos and his clones. Maybe Bill p may bring something. The usual HF crowd that goes to those things will bring whatever it is they'll bring. I only have the one appointment at 1:30 pm.
