Audeze Sine DX Measurements and Impressions.

These headphones are super-aural (on the ear). Size is fairly compact allowing ease of throwing them in the backpack for travel - something that cannot be done with the Sennheiser HD650, a headphone that I wish I could pack with my on business travel (I travel light with only one bag that contains my laptop, electronics, and my clothes).

The grill (and headphone) is rather attractive I think.

    Succinct Subjective Impressions:

    • Sine DX sounds better with an amp. iPhone or even Sony ZX2 doesn't quite do it. Don't laugh, the ZX2 actually does well into lower Z loads - it just don't like high Z phones because it can't crank up the voltage.
    • From a portable, the Sine DX sounds slow, plodding, and compressed. Less so even when given a decent amp (Schiit Fulla for example). Still, the Sine DX does still have this tendency to a be a bit slower and compressed. It is also a little bit less resolving than other dynamics I have on hand: Sony MA900 and HD650K.
    • It still sounds closed. Not claustrophobic by any means, but essentially sounds closer to a closed headphone than open headphone.
    • Think Audeze LCD series, but a lower fidelity, but super portable version. I wish transient response / speed was better on the Sine DX.
    • Treble is very smooth. Smoother than the LCD series treble, which always has a small peak (but buried in the rolled treble) here or there.

Pretty decent looking FR. Does that midrange and treble D2 translate to a crunchy, nasty sound like the Sine?

I hear a midrange-shout-screech city thing on the Sine (closed). Too much for my tastes. I know a lot of people didn't have a problem with it, but I found it annoying (similar to the closed LCD-XC, I detested the sound of that too.) The DX still has a bit of this, but it's not anywhere difficult. In fact, a lot of the LCD series headphones exhibit a bit of this, a localized bump around 1kHz -1.5kHz. Tonally, the DX sounds quite a bit like the Audeze LCD series (open) headphones, just a lower fidelity version. Below is a frequency response comparison between Sine (closed) and Sine DX.

    Sine DX = Green
    Sine (closed) = Purple

*Nothing to see here folks...move along.

I'm interested in the LCD Pro but Audeze House Sound doesn't give me much hope. They do look nice though.

Yeah, pretty much Audeze house sound. I know many don't like it, but I think Audeze did a good job here in keeping with it. It's less Audeze house sound, but poor transient response and compression that bugs me more.

Will burn-them in a few more hours. If anything changes, will let you guys know, otherwise going to Tyll in a few days.

Thank you this is great stuff.

That is quite different to the Sine but the frequency response is also different and things decay faster if it isn't as loud at that frequency.

Is it usual for it go above the 0dB line at 1500hz?

Can an inverse filter be applied?

Depends. The CSD plots are normalized according to an algorithm that places greater weight toward the treble up to 12kHz.

Well Steg ordered me the special earpads and adapters to make the DX into over the ear headphones. Unfortunately, I received a toxic disaster. As we can see, the plastic bag that contained the earpads contained moisture inside.

If I unexpectedly die, then you guys know exactly what happened.

P.S. Threw them in the wash and they are drying right now. The smell of the mold is upon me and I cannot get rid of it.

Pretty sure they'll sound more organic now. Lively as well.

I really hope you used some vinegar/borax/bleach/etc beforehand. The wash itself will not be enough to sterilize the pads. For that matter, if you tossed the pads in with clothes, please sterilize and rewash the clothes. We don't want your whole family getting sick now.

Or Woolite, you'd be surprised. Or a cycle through the dishwasher (like you do for baseball caps)...

With that said, I wish Audeze made a Cypher Cable for this headphone too. Their customer service advised me to not use the Cypher for the closed Sine, as they put it: "... it has a different frequency response curve as the regular Sine"

I guess the point is moot anyways, as the DX is a limited run thing...

@Marvey I'm baffled at your brief description of the dx. I would almost describe my pair in the opposite manner. I'm hearing speed and good transient response. They are on the lean side and need EQ or some TP to warm them up. NOT the warm fuzzy Audeze house sound at all for me. I'm guessing the this could be classic Audeze variation from pair to pair...not sure.

Does anyone have instructions on how to put these pads and adapters on the headphone?

You could just ask for the legos.

I don't need their legos. My 7 year old doesn't know it yet but we have about 40 unopened sets for her to put together in the backlog.

The adapter goes around the edges like this. The earpad is stretched over the edge.

There are two sets of inserts included in two different thickness that goes inside the earpad but they aren't needed.
