The DT 770 80 ohms really isn't better than a Porta Pro and actually is more one note and has worse quality control on the drivers. The build is good enough if you don't abuse it and Koss has a lifetime warranty they will actually honor unlike Beyer's spotty support.

The CAL! used to be 40-50 bucks and is now 80 something. The HD 500 series is fine for a hundred bucks but isn't worth 150-250 at all.

You're approaching a good pair of powered monitors or the HD 600/650 which are just infinitely better than anything being discussed here. Paying 200 for an HD 599 is just a waste of money. You're better off buying something from Koss, saving up another hundred bucks or so in week or two, and then buying a HD 600 as at least you can use the Koss on the go for mid-fi sound.

KSC75 is the same driver as PortaPro but titanium-coated. I need to grab some portapros and compare myself. The 35's are $50. Might as well just get the portapros. I've enjoyed the cheapo 75's as beaters that I can just throw in my bag and they're great for the hour or so that I have a day to listen to them at my desk at work. Can't believe I paid $11 for them.

I've got a pair of these on the way. I wanted something tiny I could fall asleep with. I think it was 7 or 8 bucks shipped from aliexpress.

I've actually found the Beyer DT series has pretty good QC and driver matching. Those tesla drivers on the other hand seem to suffer a bit more (at least the small ones).

I only have the treble issue you stated with the KSC75, and even then it's more of a tonal thing. Sounds metallic. Porta pro is as clean as anything else I've heard up top under $100

If you have the gear to drive them. If you do, I think there will be bunches available used when HFers plug them into their iPhones and let out a huge WTF...
