I’ve always used Maxell, but it always takes a couple of times to get the lens clean. Or at least to get the player to read the CD without issues.

Anyone tried others. Any recommendations short of opening up the player?

I have a 'Parasound Perfect Image 20/20' disc. Can't remember the last time I used it, so it must be really effective ;)

Can't find anything current about it on a cursory web search and can't remember where or when I bought it - so not much use to you, sorry...

On the topic, though, I see claims in some forums that some manufacturers have recommended against using these things, the suggestion instead being to blow compressed air at the lens through the open tray or with the cover off.

I’ve seen that too. I’ve used air. It works but at some point I have to use the disc. Maybe it’s the tons of pollen we have in the Spring here. Some of it is sticky. Perhaps a swab of the lens and a peek under the microscope?

No, I’m not really going to do that. Maybe someone with a dead laser?

Cotton bud (I think you guys call them Q tips?) and some alcohol, the isopropyl stuff works much better than Bud. You need to open the player obvs. but this was always way more effective for me than those cleaning discs.
