My new Black Widow doesn't have a muting relay like the Schiit amps I'm used to, and I've already forgotten to unplug the headphones a few times when the amp is switched off.

Would there be any downsides or danger if I just left them the headphones plugged in?

I've encountered very few amps which have dangerous DC transients during power up/down. Amps are usually very symmetrical devices, meaning that positive and negative sides should balance each other out. With that said, I know of a DAC which at one state was able to kill devices downstream from it by drawing more power from the positive rail, thus on power down the output stage sent a really nasty DC transient.

With that said, Schiit once had amps without a relay. You can look up why they implemented it.

Personally I'd always unplug headphones if the amp doesn't have a muting relay. I don't bother with Jonada nor my Wells Enigma, but there's no way I'd risk it with my LH Labs Pulse (no relays on the latter). Also could depend on the headphones...I've known an HE6 to be fried by a spike, but I'd expect a decent dynamic (eg Sennheiser) to be far more able to deal with it.
