Used ZX100. Closer to a ZX2 than the price would suggest.

Edit: Don't have to take my word for it, others have chipped in:

If somehow you can find a used A&K Jr for around $250 it's a quite good one. Pleasant SQ, has internal + card storage, not bulky, but battery life is just average; about 7 - 8 hrs of continuous playback with the screen display time set to minimum amount.

Shanling M1 I think is even a better option, small and compact, about $150-ish new. Zerodeefex has it and seems to like it

The Questyle QP1R, with Moon Audio Silver Dragon cabled, Shure SRH1540 headphones sounds sublime. Love this player. I think I will check out the Lotoo Paw gold Diana in time, but the QP1R kicked AK240SS butt in my opinion.

I recently picked up a Lotoo Paw 5000 in a trade. I thought I had read these were going for under $300 now but Penon Audio has them for $325.

The UI is beyond simple. It doesn't read tags, so database updates are lightning quick. It basically uses your folder tree. There is an all songs view that uses the names of your individual files. All songs random seems to work pretty good and the algorithm is at least as good as the AK stuff. There is playlist options but I haven't explored that yet. I assume it requires creating them on your computer.

At any rate, it has really good synergy with Andromeda imo. Even thought it's 0.5 Zout, it doesn't have big bass with Andromeda like a QP1R or even the Shanling M1. It's very balanced sounding together with lots of top end sparkle and really good clarity throughout. The clarity is really good.

It has lots of EQ/filter options, which all sound bad to me. It has this weird damping switch. High or Low "Damp". High damp sounds best with all my iems. Low sounds like it's adding 5 or so ohms? Since it's fairly low powered, I use high gain and high damping and the synergy with Andromeda gets a recommendation from me, if you were looking for a cheaper dap than say the ZX2.

I haven't heard any of those. I've never been a fan of the Fiio house sound in the past (too warm) but I've never heard any of their daps.

It does seem to have some problems playing certain songs though, I'm not sure why. I have a DP-X1 and a Fiio X7 too, and have tried multiple micro SD cards, but for some reason, the AK Jr just skips certain FLAC files and can't play them. Haven't been able to put my finger on why. Other than that it's been a pretty neat little DAP.

Just picked up the Cayin N3, fairly bare bones for features and UI but it's small and sounds really good so far. Using it with CA Dorado's. Pretty cheap too 149 USD?

Well I got my HM601 working again YAY

What are your thoughts on the old Sony Walkman Players, the Original Fiio X3 and a classic iRiver H120? I'm looking for the VERY best sound for under $100, I'm kinda hoping I grab the iRiver H120 just to have in my collection, now that my hm601 is working why not start collecting old entry level daps

Does anyone know if there exists a DAP that has the function to EQ only the left or the right side of the signal? Would be great if that would be possible, because I have a slight attenuation in the mids on the right ear and don´t want/need to push that frequencies on both ears. Thanks for any suggestions.

And exactly the same design as the first. They should have modified a bit.

So they swapped the DAC chip and added more power, which was not really lacking on the original (relatively speaking for a portable), then increased the price by 50%. Did they at least fix the scroll wheel issues?

This probably doesn't help in anyway but the high end Samsung phones and tablets do have a feature like this called adapt sound (I think?) Basically it gives you a short hearing test and eq's each side accordingly. Unlike a lot of the Samsung "features" this one one actually works pretty well. On a DAP, probably the best you can do is play around with the balance a little and eq for the best compromise between each side

Looks promising, not sure if we've mentioned it here but I've got my hands on the Cayin N3 this week an I'm decently impressed so far. More power, less noise and better clarity + plus a mix of digital filters to further adjust the sound, I'm about 50/50 so far in my preference of the N3 over my old rockBoxed 601.

HM601 has better timbre/impact/imaging most of the time, though if you've got a track with a thicker mix... the 601 will muck it up... still though it's noisy compared to the N3.

I've been really curious though to explore the entry level dap options lately, what are some of the favorites for the sub $200 market right now

Shanling M1 is ~$150 and can be found for around $100 or a bit less used. Someone posted an odd Kpop band signature version of the AK Jr that A&K had on their website for $189.

I just received an M1 BTW. I bought it from shotgunshane. I haven't had it long enough to develop a strong opinion yet but from what I've heard so far I think I could be happy with it as an on-the-go solution.

Yeah you'd need to go to their site and download the firmware for it. I had the Qp1 and it had the same issue so I emailed Questyle asking about it. To bad I don't remember what was the firmware and I can't look at my QP1 anymore since someone broke into my car and stole it from my glove compartment...
