I noticed the walnut headphones from the E-MU wood series that are currently being offered on Massdrop.com (for $100 + $6 shipping):

Any SBAF members that have heard these cans and care to comment on the sound quality would be greatly appreciated.

These are the same as Creative Aurvana Live! (the original version) and close to the Denon AH-D1001.
At least that is to be expected... never heard the EMU.

When you read the CAL sound descriptions you may get the idea.
Fun to listen to, a bit dark-ish (to me) but pleasant sounding even un-amped.

I think the only differences are the wooden cups and different printing on the headband... I am really tempted to buy these but I fear they may have simply slapped some wood without any kind of rear damping. On the other side they may have actually done a good job and got an even better performer. But CAL!s cost less and we have measurements that prove their worth.

Finally received mine today. Initial impressions are good. Very natural sounding, good soundstage, detailed and refined in the highs. Mids and vocals are very good. Only weak point is loose bass, a little too much presence, but at least it isn't invading the mids. Will try to mod them tonight or tomorrow

Alright modded them. basically covered the hole behind the driver double taping on it a leather-like material and put some sponge compressed between that and the wood. By the way the frame of the driver is different from D1100. There's a damping ring around the driver with a metal mesh. It seems like they actually put some thought on it.
Anyway (sub) bass is much more controlled now, altough stille a little north of neautral. Good thing is it's very deep.

EDIT: I thought i could get better results, so I redid the mod differently. Removed the stock paper mesh in front of the hole behind the driver, put some hd650-like foam, cotton tissue and a good amount of cotton inside the rear chamber.
Now it is really really good. Very neutral, and still very extended.

After many other tests, a piece felt was he best for backwave damping behind the driver's hole. leather like material is covering the plastic baffle on the front, while nothing's in front of the drivers. I really need a measurement rig.
