Yes, but ... it's impossible to anticipate everything, although Doug does a pretty good job of it. When we were testing out the Torpedo 2 (died for various reasons), he had pads that would allow you to install the parafeed caps either width-wise or lengthwise. The first T3 prototype used electrolytics with various bypass configurations.

Anyway, I think if the pads were staggered, this would not be much effort. The caps fit, it's just contorting the leads that got to me. At least the way I did it, the middle caps had to go in first, but then the outboard caps had to run the leads under the first pair. It was a chicken or egg thing that turned out rather difficult.

I suppose one could cut the hard leads off and use hookup wire. Maybe that's what some of you have done? I may try that on another one and see if it's easier.

@philipmorgan from the recent Bay Area meet:

"My "sound quality ROI" pick would be the TIII. It's a great combination of dynamics, resolution, and price, and although I only listened to it through Sennheisers, I suspect it would handle other headphones nicely. It did seem to soften the "edges" of notes a tiny bit compared to the ZDS, which made the TIII seem less detailed, but its well-balanced combination of qualities makes it an incredibly good value IMO."

Yup, mine is modded. I added Aluminum-Oil caps (the $13 a piece ones) and the CCS board. That and my Amprex 7062 tubes.

I just placed my order for a fully upgraded Torpedo III kit with Cinemag Transformers and Mundorf EVO Al-Oil parafeed caps.

I like the phalic shape of the Torpedo III it's so manly.

Did you get the EVO caps from beezar or a parts retailer? Should I attempt this cap install.

It's from beezar, there was an option get these caps instead of stock ones for an extra $75. The whole kit came out to be a total of $803 + $24 shipping.

As for the cap install, I don't know if you should attempt it since I haven't even gotten my kit yet maybe someone else can answer that question.

Aw dang, I would have taken up that option were it available at the time. Guess I'll pick them up in a month when I have a bit more time to put them in.

I would like to ask @TomB and @dsavitsk as designers of the Torpedo III.

I am trying to guess how the Torpedo III sound like and I have a little bit of experience with the ECP L-2 which I think is discontinued now? How do they compare?

The ECP L-2 has a really interesting sound, very different from a normal tube amp. Much quieter and controlled in the bass region like a good solid-state amp. I think delicate is the right word to describe the sound?

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,
    Jeremiah

I think the T3 circuit is a lot more interesting than the L2. The L2 had the advantage of more space and some really expensive parts. Built with the same caliber of parts, I'd take a T3 any day.

Others have a lot more experience listening to the T3 at this point, so they can probably tell you more than I can. I have not heard an L2 in years ...

    :) That's the goal.

Ha! Don't put me in the same category as Doug in being a "designer" of the amp.

I do a little casework design, CAD drawings, building a how-to website and then selling them. Doug's the genius designer. ;)

Has anyone used the TKD 2CP-2511 Series, and was it a drop-in replacement for the ALPS blue?

I have one in mine, but no, definitely not a drop in replacement. It's probably not worth it, but I'm glad to have it anyways. I could get some pics this weekend, perhaps.

Sure, would like to see the pics. What were the challenges in getting it installed - or by not worth it, did you mean sonically?

    Thanks.

Try reading back one page. ;) There's also a complete list of specs on the Beezar sales listing. I think we've tested this amp more than any amp before. The data on the previous page in this thread represents 16 separate tests with the results plotted for Noise and THD.
