Kenny Garrett's solo here comes to mind. Starting at about 5:30 of this he starts interacting with Miles's solo and then slowly takes over, building through slow burn to intense climax. Bonus points for Miles' with his distinct voice taking credit at the end.

Clyde Stubblefield defined the word "Funky" for me. That break-beat will never leave my mind. He understood JB and JB understood him. This is pure Funk...

P.S. If you do not feel this I feel sad for you. You need to dance your ass off...

It's nothing fancy, but it always struck a chord with me. Solo starts around 2:17.

    That was brilliant! Need moar.

The Tornado of Souls solo always brings tears to my eyes while I am headbanging angrily, emotion overload. Solo starts from 3:00 but the build-up to it is important too.

Also, this guy absolutely NAILS it, sighz, makes me extremely jealous

This whole track is basically a solo and pure Django improvisational genius. I love how he builds and resolves tension several times in a few short minutes.

Great topic, and that Kenny Garrett solo has long been on my list of great solos. Here are some of my favorites:

Mitchell Wood on In a Mellow Tone:

    Bob Sheppard on First Circle:

Cannonball Adderley on One Man's Dream:

Ronnie Cuber (Bari sax) on "The Cooker" from The George Benson Cookbook . Really, Benson and Cuber are great on the whole album.

And here's my favorite from Stevie Ray Vaughan:

I remember when you went to a rock concert, you were definitely gonna get a drum solo, whether you wanted it or Not!
There's just too many great solos on recordings, (live or studio) to pick just one.
There are some that really grab me every time I hear 'em:
Guitar: Jimmy Page on "stairway to heaven", Hendrix on "Machine gun", Jerry Garcia on "Wharf Rat" Winterland 12/31/78
Organ: Patrick Moraz on "silently Falling" (Chris Squire "Fish out of water"), Rick Wakeman on "Close to the edge"
Moog: Keith Emerson on "Lucky man"
    Sax: Coltrane "Africa" and "Naima"
Trumpet: Art Farmer on "Bloodcount" (from portrait of)
Drums: Well you're gonna get one whether you want it or not, my favorite drummers are Elvis Jones, Bill Bruford, and Stuart Copeland

One of my all time favorites has to be from Pink Floyd's High Hopes. Starts a little after 5 minutes, but it would be a crime not to build up to it by listening to the rest of the song first. Not fast or super technically impressive just... very Pink Floyd. It's like the guitar is echoing the song that came before it but also goes on to add new verses, you can almost hear the lyrics sung by the guitar...

Favorite solo would have to be from Roy Buchanan's Anthology album, probably his cover of "Down by the River". I used to love cranking that on some open baffle 12" University coaxes I had about a decade back.

Zakk Wylde in Ozzy's No More Tears. He looks so young in this. Epic solo starts at about 3:15.

The elephant in the room is still the second solo in "Comfortably Numb"- bombastic, progtastic monster that it is.

    ..about 04:30 in:

(..oddly, that's one of the better-quality uploads of it on t'tube. The choice seems to be awful emo video or Simpsons- go figure).

I always felt that Page's solos were Smirnoff to his Stolis production skills (Over The Hills And Far Away) but once in awhile he nailed it
