Hmm, interesting. I was thinking the zmf proteins might be like the flat hm5 pleathers, but less detailed/resolving doesn't sound like what I'm hearing with them. Hopefully more comparison this weekend and I'll report back

Have to take back my previous comments on angled HM5 pleathers versus the flats. I think i had something funky going on with how I was attaching the pads during that first comparison. I'm settled on angled HM5 pleathers and 1/4" open-cell foam for now and loving it.

So I just did the HM5 angled pleathers with the 1/4" open cell foam linked by @Hands in this post http://www.superbestaudiofriends.or...cal-elear-measurements.2585/page-7#post-86948

It's too early for impressions, although the treble is certainly laid back and non-peaky. Are you covering the entire driver with the foam? I initially just put a pad-sized disc inside the actual pad, before realizing that's not how it was laid out. Any reason having the foam on the ear-side of the pad screen would matter?

I may try this foam in front of my HE-6 too, it's just a hair bright to my tastes. Am I understanding correctly that's the open cell foam's main effect? (I need a measurement rig...)

I dunno, I just preferred the sound of it over the driver, and only the driver. You can try other materials or less thick foam if it's too laid back. You may enjoy it without front damping. Or you could try a donut of damping.

Thanks, it occurred to me shortly after posting that the way I'm doing it also covers up all the open mesh, which unsurprisingly makes it sound closed in, muted, lowered the bass impact a bit but it certainly was super laid back up top.

Sticking to just HM5 angled for now, seems to retain bass impact of stock and sounds more open and clear than full foam. Will try a small donut circle directly on the driver if I end up finding some treble uneveness. Thanks for all your trailblazing on this.

Well, to be fair, pad swaps and simple front damping are pretty basic. I haven't checked into more advanced mods. I encourage everyone to experiment. :)

I didn't like the Elear without mods all that much for anything.

Disappointing for a pair of headphones that cost $1500 CAD here.

Sure. On the other hand, it's mostly tonal issues that are very correctable with cheap mods, which then is arguably worth the asking price.

i am listening Slipknot The Gray Chapter now with them and i prefer hd800 stock, but aenema from tool i prefer elear more than hd800 but i prefer hd650 more than both on aenema, than on undertow - prison sex again i prefer hd800.
HD800 suck with 70% 90s metal so its not hard for elears to be better but 650s beat them both imho on many 90s metal recordings, vocals and rifs are more to my liking and everything sounds better on higher volume. On newer metal albums (last few years) i like hd800 more than both to my ears and imho... :)

    Thanks for your feedback ;)

Maybe I should give another chance to the HD650.. (Not a big fan of the HD800)

Read through this thread and other threads focus on the Elear. Different pads and some front damping over driver.

no problem :) 650 i recently changed earpads and headband on them and fell in love with them again they are not best metal hp out there, but between elears and hd800 they sound best with 90s music generally, all older albums of slipknot,korn,tool,manson,snot...imho sounds better on 650 than elears and hd800, last albums of korn and slipknot even on yt sounds best on hd800, they have that bigger wall of sound and they are not peaky and they are much faster than both and sound is cohesive on new albums and not disconnected and thin like on older albums. Ofc imho and to my ears :)

No problem. I still need to post a pic showing exactly how I do things, but if you read through the threads, you'll find it's super easy and straightforward to implement my ideas. Long story short, and IMO, it's really the stock pads on the Elear that hold it back.
