    HD650 / HD600 Driver Transplantation Experiments
    1. We are curious bastards. This exercise is part of our unraveling unexplained mysteries series.
    2. We want to find out if there are driver differences between the HD650 and HD600.
    3. This is part one. We will first obtain a baseline of the HD650M (modded with coin cutout, back damping removed, and a little bit of Dynamat) and HD600 (stock).
    4. We want to find out if the HD650 bass hump is because of the enclosure or driver or both. We plan on transplanting the HD650 driver (which we suspect is more damped) into the HD600 enclosure.
    5. BTW, the HD600 headphone is 2db more efficient than the HD650 headphone at 1kHz. I don't know if this is the driver or the enclosure - at least not yet.

Remember to use the same pads! The wear of the pads affects the bass hump so use new pads or only one set of pads from one of the headphones.

Now you just need to get the various versions of the HD 650. The silver bezel with the same treble as the HD 600 but 3b db more bass (the one you have), the silver driver ones that are the HD 600 bass hump but damped in the treble (the Sonarworks measured batch from the black boxes), and the black driver model.

EDIT: The one with the same treble but bass hump might be as Sennheiser changed the bezel material and pads before they changed the drivers. Who knows. Only way to find out would be to stick the drivers in different enclosures versus an HD 600 (black or silver driver? Both?) with the same set up pads (new pads to ensure no wear and tear for science? Overkill?)

Interesting to see if you come to the same conclusions as Startocaster did who also did these experiments.

Can't find these measurements any more though.

Can someone link me to Tyll's dissection article and videos? My Google skills are inferior.

Marv, I'll leave one of my HD580 drivers with you this weekend. I find that it measures with super low bass distortion on my rig for some reason.

@purrin any update on this? Based on post 2 I assume the difference between 650 and 600 is purely on driver and the slight differents in fig. 2 are from spider cage + coin mod? Really interested as I'm planning to get a pair of 650 drivers(£33 cheaper than 600's for whatever reason) to my HD600 for science! But I don't have a 650 to compare to.

No updates other than Sennheiser knew what they were doing and that the HD650 driver is best in an HD650 cup, and likewise HD600 driver is best in an HD600 cup.

Do the graphs in Post #2 suggest that the Dynamat mod is significant while the coin mod + removal of foam disk may not offer real benefits? I did all three mods together. What is the best way to interpret those graphs?

Now that I think about it, if I understand it correctly, there are only 3 frequency response curves to compare in post #1 and #2:
HD650 driver in HD650cup(dynamat+coin+foam disk removal)
HD650 driver in HD600cup(dynamat+foam disk removal)
    HD600 driver in HD600cup(stock)
so there is nothing which would indicates the effect of an individual mod.

My personal preference is HD600's drivers in HD650's screens with quarter hole mod
