Yes a mix of both but tilted more towards the HEK/HEX is what I understood from yours and @brencho 's impressions. Thanks.

I think the impressions here are very good at conveying how they sound and hope to hear the susvara soon but from memory it didn't impress as well most probably due to setup.

Also, what pads do you have on the codex??
Leather Audeze was my fav for retaining juicy bass but the vegan pads had largest Soundstage with most neutral signature.
Both were noticably better overall, than the slightly congested stock ( Alpha ) Pads with smaller inner diameter which covered part of the drivers...

Do these hit harder than the Utopia? Are they more or less warm bass wise compared to the Utopia?

They hit less hard than the Utopia which hit less hard than the HE-6? Wonder what the motivation behind the tuning was.

If only there was a 'perfect' headphone. For whatever it's worth though what keeps me coming back to the HEX V2s is comfort, both physical, and that the sound is on the polite side. I'm on the hunt for a harder hitting headphone, but for multi-hour listening, there is a lot to be said for cans that are on the laid back side.

I heard the prototype of these in Singapore Can Jam and they put things like Utopia to shame. The pricing is really scary though... it makes more sense to get an electrostatic system at that kind of budget.

When they realize they need more efficient version with single sided magnets...

The issue is that with the power requirements needed, most totl cans will climb higher if given same power.

I remember an old HEK being fed out of a powerful "HeadTrip" amplifier,
And I was quite surprised to observe that they were slamming hard and excellent, so I was quite surprised .

You give any planar more power and it will respond well.

The two headphones which impressed me most overall sonically were the original Orpheus HE90 and the Abyss AB-1266. The former is nearly impossible to get for a reasonable price these days. The latter is too uncomfortable for me to wear for any period of time after my extensive jaw surgery.

Thankfully there's a third headphone I can add to that list: the Editi--- I mean, the Susvara.

Kinda curious to give the HE-1 another shot now that I'm familiar with the Sussy.

PS. I'm still a Stax head, don't get me wrong. For me they're more like a hobby in and of themselves.

PPS. The PMx2 and ESP950 are still my picks for the overall "best headphones" you can buy right now. Price being a huge factor here. In their own way they are more honest and down to earth---more like good, trusty friends----than the Orpheus, Abyss, and Susvara. They'll tell it like it is more often than not.

The trifecta of tingles, though. They make those hairs on the back of your neck stand on end.

I think high end headphones tend to be a bit shakier value compared to speakers if you have a general idea of marginal manufacturing cost. The speaker industry is more mature and there's a lot of companies that are vertically integrated or mail order that provide tremendous value in the speaker industry which just doesn't exist in the headphone space.

LOL. Just different sound really. Personally, I really miss the likes of the HE-500, that dark sound with maybe a little treble sparkle. @ohhgourami's HE-6 is actually more neutral than that and subtracts all treble fuckery of the stock HE-6. He also has the uber x screw version which comes with more plankton.

The new HFM thin-diaphgram line heapdhones, the HEK, HEX, and SUSVARA are tuned differently from the classic HFM's of yore. I think of it as different strokes for different folks. This is what I see as the main reason for people who like the new stuff and people who like the older stuff.

@songmic: You've been around here for a long time. When @LFF is done with the SUSVARA, I will ship it to you. @LFF should be going back to school in a month or so.

If I couldn't have a Code-X I'd probably get a PMx2 and run it off a Raggy and be one and done.

This is very intriguing... but like in an academic sense, Susvara pricing is so dumb

@songmic yeah if you need to use a Gungnir Multibit/Mjolnir2 stack for whatever reason (as I did!) I can see selling the HE6 and getting an HEKv2. but if you can find a Code-X, that stack would do just fine by it!!

Let's do this. Have @LFF work his Code-X magic first. Maybe we can call this the Code-Z or Omega 3. Then we share. How about this?

Holy schiitballs, is @LFF performing the same magic on the Susvara that turned the HE-5 into Code-X, and I get to listen to it? I'm speechless...

Honestly, even if it turns out incredible and much better than the stock Susvara (I'm sure it will), I don't think I would be able to afford it right now. The ideal scenario would be if LFF has a Code-X or two left that he would be willing to sell me, but I know it's a long shot. Still, it would be a blessing to be able to listen firsthand to LFF's magic that everyone has been talking about.

Thank you for offering this great opportunity. Living across the Pacific and not being able to attend any of the awesome meets have made me feel left out, but not as much anymore...

Just fly out here for a vacation. Drive up the coast and visit the beaches from San Diego up to Satan Cruz. I did this last week. One of the best vacations ever if you can swim, surf, or kayak. And cheap too if you plan it right.

Remember, swim parallel to the shore if you get caught in a riptide. Don't panic and learn to watch the waves to identify them.

I have both and personally prefer the PMx2.
It's really a different beast, though.

As for modding the newer HiFiMans, I've got some experiments cooking with the HEK. Seems like no matter what, there's no commercial headphone that can't be made better with modding. Just the amount of time and care required to tune them being prohibitive, I guess.

To be perfectly honest, if you live in a "legal state," the biggest improvement to music you can get for the money is found at dispensaries. That or just listen while watching a sunrise. Or both (so long as you're not driving).

If I'll ever break my inner fear regarding big water, you're the man I'll talk to, that's a given!

Getting back on track, so we can expect modded Susvara impressions here, aye?
