Could this come under the mental-manipulative trick called damning with faint praise?

Also, it is a known (as in... I read it in a book once) sales technique to talk up the lower-priced item when you know your customer's attention is more and more on the high-price thing.

(but I hate it when I've made up my mind to buy the expensive thing and the salesman, sincerely, does not give me positive confirmation because he knows I don't actually need it)

Hopefully not off-topic, but I wouldn't buy the Sony cans because I don't care for Sony's 'The One and Only' mindset, and their repeated attempts to own standards. Besides I've always previously found much of their gear to be mediocre. Credits for mass produced, but the sound of Sony gear has always left me uninspired.

I haven't heard these though, and maybe they are the the bomb, but then many people think Beats headphones are it too. Fashion trends happen too. The bomb today, and then tomorrow not. Give it a few years, and you find out whether it was the trend of the moment or really a long term thing.

Hard to get off topic in this thread. It's been around the world twice.

Sony. Beta tape format. Better than VHS. They HAD to be the only OEM. Gone.

Sony. SACD. Great idea. Had to have DRM, so analog out only. Then, transport QC issues on their expensive units. Sony stops supporting format. Customers spend a ton on gear and discs. Pretty much gone, except for niche market.

Sony. Stops supporting SACD playback with "update" to firmware on PS3. Again has to have DRM.

Sony. Get's their systems hacked, and we find out all sorts of interesting things about them and everyone else. PR disaster.

Sony. Blu-ray player. Only has coax digital out for sound. No DAC? HDMI baby.

All in all not a big fan. Been burned too many times. Sony, mostly baloney. IMHO.

Oh yeah. Bought rights to Beatles catalog. Happy ending. Copyrights return to songwriters after 50 years.

I dunno. Personally I think that Sony makes a damned good stab at audio. Sure some of it sucks, but a lot of it turns out really well for the price. I'm currently rocking a pair of XBA-N3 in ears, and from what I've heard of the competition they punch well above their price point (I'm thinking SE535 here, hell I even preferred them to the SE846, but that's subjective). Also the MDR-1000X which almost, but not quite, handed Bose their arse on a plate in terms of BT NC headphones.

That said, you cant rely on Sony to be consistently good. Mind you I've heard some howlers from Senny, Beyer and AKG as well, so all things equal when considered.

Link -> Sony Releases New Stupid Piece Of Shit That Doesn't f'ing Work --- The Onion.

But there was a time before all that f'ing shit. My first half-decent radio was made by Sony. My first (as in actually owned by me) hifi system had a Sony amp. My Walkman Pro cassette deck, albeit a museum piece now, is a gorgeous museum piece. Once upon a time, they were about innovation for real, and they did make quality gear for real. Once upon a time they were a real engineering company, not an entertainment beer-moth.
I think they made one hell of a good stab at it. Pro stuff too. Probably still can.

Accidents in Marketing departments. In an alternative universe:

"Hey, is that a new Walkman?"
"Yes! Well, no, not really: it's one of those Apple things."

Oh, and I just bought a Sony camera :oops:

If you haven't seen The Onion video it is a must. NSFW! Funniest f'ing bit I've seen in f'ing forever.

Also. I have had the same experience @Thad E Ginathom. My first transitor radio was a Sony. 1968. It still works. Beta tape deck. Still works great. 30 year old Beta recordings. Almost play like new. Some noise. VHS. Done. So yeah, was a Sony fan boy. It's the business end that got them on the ropes as recently as 2014. They seemed to have recovered somewhat by "focusing on our high margin products." Z1R's? See thread back on track. Oh, Marv is busy, so, Jude is an idiot. Now we are good to go!

Sony makes quality products but questionable decisions.

Having worked with them they take quality very very seriously.

Can't argue with that with over 50 years of my family and I buying their products. I think they have some new management. A lot of what I read about management was the same people had been at the top 30 years. Behemoth of a company with a lot of momentum. I think it makes it harder to change course when you need to. Look at GM just a few years back. Same problem I think.

fwiw, and not a comment on the tuning/sq of z1R, z7, CD-900st, 7550 and ex1000, they are all manufactured and hand assembled by their workshop of a few dozen craftspeople, (staff of 170 according to the article)

While many of us are not fans of their headphone engineer's tuning choices, mass produced they are not. All of the above are also serviced at the same workshop iirc.

below is a repost of the link of the said workshop

Yea, no doubt they make some long lasting stuff. I've just become jaded by the harsh sound of so much mass produced gear. It's possible these new cans are one of the exception.

Saturday I moved a lot of my headphone gear into my main rig. Laptop, Gungnir, Wyrd etc. as we had company and they hadn't heard the new Sgt. Pepper re-mix. Stayed up till sunrise. So yesterday I didn't feel like moving it all back. Last night I went old school. CD player to Black Widow. Then grabbed the Koss KSC-75's. No mods. Didn't like the sound modded. They scaled like crazy. Listened for several hours. Those things are really a wonder. So, sometimes I wonder if all this uber headphone stuff is worth the money. Except for a select few. That's why we need SBAF to stay non-sponsored. Otherwise it's just marketing. Yes creates friction with others. Too bad. Hopefully this robust discussion can continue. Easy to become jaded at the moment.

Well, at least it seems they're showing they've learned their lesson (in part) with LDAC.

In other news, I wonder if the headphone Tyll is wearing in this photo is of any significance.

LCD-4, I'm pretty sure (unless your question was rhetorical/ironic/sarcastic/...).

I was gonna make a "too heavy" joke, but figured I'd leave it up to everyone's imagination ;)

That's a very good editorial article from Tyll, I don't have enough thumbs to express my agreement.

And in other news I just did a search of this thread for the word 'cunt' and got 6 hits (7 if you include this post).

I love this thread, its more fun than dry humping your sister.

I think @Tyll Hertsens just made a loyal reader out of me. He just seems like a mature, grown-up SBAFer when he writes, if you can open your eyes and forget his uncensored -- or censored -- ballet pictures from his youth...

PS The whole ballet thing kinda reminds me of Beercules:
