Those are PCI cards. If you have legacy PCI slots on your motherboard it will work just fine. You can still get the drivers from Digigram here: https://www.digigram.com/services-s.../discontinued-products/discontinued-vx-cards/

Hmm. I have 2 PCI slots, but the board is pretty new (less that 2 years). H97 chipset. Will not having a "real" PCI slot not work?

As mentioned, I believe it is the same, at least in the sense of AES out, just normal PCI version. I should mention I went with the VX222e instead of AES16e or E22 because I only have PCI-express slots, and it was much cheaper of the 3. If you have regular PCI options definitely seem to be cheaper, with vx222, AES16...etc

I'm curious how would one go from AES into a Fulla 2, which is USB only? Or is another DAC in play? Can one go from AES to another spdif other than BNC?

I have a newer Asus p8p67 motherboard and the aes16 PCI works perfectly.

As I understand it it is a bit of a roll of the dice with PCI bridge chips. Could work fine or could not work at all, it all depends on the particular chip and the particular card and the alignment of the stars. There's some threads here:

    https://www.gearslutz.com/board/mus...use-pci-card-pci-e-only-machine-solution.html

If for example you were to get a Digigram PCI cheap off ebay you could always return it if it didn't work.

I was just joking about the Fulla 2 :) My queries are just for my inevitable return to madness.

You got me! But I was generally/genuinely curious about what one could adapt AES into, if it's not just BNC.

Edit: in my defense tho I know you have/had a bifrost

You got me! I was shocked that nobody had pointed out the poor allocation of funds there yet, haha.

I'm thinking of picking up a PCI card for cheap as well. You can get the Digigrams for around $100 on ebay. Seems like a silly easy decision to me.

What type of breakout cable/adapter would I need to use coaxial on the Bifrost? I have a hard time telling exactly what cables come with card.

    Thanks for your impressions @PoochZag

It's like you've been sneakily viewing my google search history :p

Digigram VX222e/VX222e-mic Sound cards are delivered with two breakout cables :

    - One digital with Input and output AES + a DSUB I/O connector + 1 RCA connector - (LTC in?) . no Coax Out ;)
    - One Analog cable

So you would need an AES to Coax adapter for your bifrost.

For SPDIF out, I wonder if a cheaper and easy to find but well regarded ASUS sound card with Coaxial SPDIF Output could do properly the job...

I have a Essence STX II 7.1, can take a look after work to see if there's any transformer isolation for the coax output.

Make sure you use the custom drivers for an Asus card. That way you can disable all processing and it should lower latency and jitter.

Well the drivers worked great on my Xonar D2X before i upgraded to a Lynx. Staying away from the comments is a good practice.

    Thanks @sorrodje .

I wondered if a well regarded ASUS card even existed!

It would certainly be easier to go that route, but I didn't know how much of an improvement it would be over USB or if the professional cards would net me any noticeable gains.

Spdif on the Asus has a smoother sound compared to usb on Yggdrasil, no nasty hash or grain that kept disturbing me. The Lynx did the same but came with more focus and sounded more relaxed at the same time. I think the jump up from usb to the Asus was just as big as the jump from Asus to Lynx. But this is only a D2X, not sure if this card has a transformer coupled spdif output. Perhaps the STX's are closer to the Lynx.

Any measurements using something like this compared to usb? Or would this be more in the realm of subjective differences?

Don't have a working desktop system at the moment (all in pieces), so can't even throw in my subjective 2c.(Don't even know where people have misplaced my tripod.......)

Is the Digigram VX222 v2 (the PCI one) driver fully compatible with Windows 10, or just 8 or lower ? I plan to pick up one, but my computer is running Windows 10, and downgrading to 8 is sadly not an option :(
