I'm assuming the wood is responsible for the price difference. If it were the same price as the Mahogany I'd have ordered on day one.

Damn, I'm over a month away from getting my Purplehearts and they come up with this. It's interesting to read and see what kinds of tricks can be done with different woods.

The Ebony seems the best for sure, but I can console myself with the fact that they are much heavier too :). Well done Fostex, once again.

FWIW, I like the Purpleheart a little bit more. Sure, it's less accurate and has more severe response anomalies, but the resonance play is more interesting. They are all more different, than one better than the other. And even then, they are all more the same than different. Collect all three if you can. If you can't, just get Pikachu, or Charizard.

This is a big relief...so much hype surrounding the graph of the ebony compared to the purpleheart.

I ordered the purpleheart because they were supposed to be slightly less V-shaped than the mahogany, so it's a little confusing to see the new measurements. However, I will reserve judgement until I hear them all side by side. I didn't have my HD800S yet when I ordered, so a fun can might be better for me than yet another neutral one.

I would say FR is mostly similar among all three with the Ebony being slighter flatter than the other two. As far as Jude's measurements showing the PH to have substantially more bass, I wouldn't trust them. It's a seal issue and I know exactly how to get the measurements wrong because I've gotten it wrong myself - especially on these headphones.

Those Purplehearts seem cooler than hell. I hope the FR isn't all fukked.

The FR of the purplehearts is just as good (or "fucked up", depending on your POV) as the mahogany. Again, don't trust Jude's graphs. The purplehearts don't sound like that and they don't measure like that, unless you've fucked up the seal. Don't change your order based on measurements. All of them sound more alike the different.

So, how would these compare to the ZMF Blackwood?

Got a chance to A/B the TH-X00 today at the Wikia meet. I didn't spend much time with the mahogany, mostly focused on the purpleheart and ebony. The ebony was definitely more balanced, but I think I agree with Marv that they are mostly similar and I like the purpleheart the best as well, enough to leave the ebony group buy. Didn't notice any FR fuckery, I think I'm going to enjoy them as my go to fun can when I want a break from the HD800S. That said, the ebony was very good, just not what I need right now.

Ebony more balanced? So did the PH have more bass? What about sub-bass? The charts list Ebony with better bass extension. Is that inaccurate?

PH has more bass overall, but EB extends a bit deeper.

Depends on which chart. The measurement results here are quite different from Jude's. Jude's measurements show massively moar bass on the purplehearts which is not the case with my measurements and most importantly my ears. The pads on these headphones are bit tricky to measure. The Purplehearts do have a bit more bass with less extension compared to the Ebony, but the differences are not huge.

Thanks. What's also interesting is that your graph has a quick dip in the mids at 3k of Ebony and Jude had no dip at all in that 3.5k region of the Ebony which to him "revealed veiled mids in Mahogany". The dip is very short in yours however and it goes right back up where the mahogany and PH mid stays dipped for a little longer so maybe he is right about that.

I was a little surprised to see that 11K peak in the Ebony though based on how smooth it has been described.

    Bastards.

Now I'm going to have to add the Ebony to my Purpleheart purchase; and then I'll want the Mahogany to complete the trio ...

    So, I say again ...

    Bastards.

I'm far, far, too lazy to swap cups on headphones.

I've all the admiration in the world for people that will undertake such things, but swapping out cables that have nice, convenient, connectors is about as much as I'm up for in terms of that sort of thing these days.

Besides, I meant "Bastards" in the most affectionate way possible (it's an "English" thing).
