I"m hoping for a case too, even a nice soft one like the oppo pm3 case would be good

MattTCG posted a nice review of the Aeon on HF
    http://www.head-fi.org/products/mrspeakers-aeon/reviews/17992
He discloses that he was a tester, so take the review with a grain of salt. Also, he's a bit of a MrSpeakers fanboy, but a good guy from all reports.

anyone here listen to the Aeon? Any comparisons to the HD650 and/or Ether C?

Got the chance to listen to the AEONs this weekend in NYC. Of course it was in show conditions and I didn't spend a ton of time with them, but as an Ether C Flow owner I would say that at a first pass the AEONs compare favorably to the ECF's, especially when you consider they're half the price. I was also able to use the AEONs on the same amp I run (LAu). The SQ was solid and enjoyable with no "smack-you-over-the-head-defects" (need more time with them in quiet conditions to get into any depth) and the form-factor (while not everyone's cup-o-tea aesthetically) was very comfortable and seemed to work. I tried a couple of new HP's at the meet and a number of them I knew right away I wasn't that impressed for their price-point (including the Z1Rs) but the AEONs did make me seriously consider plopping down the intro $699 and spending a lot more time with them, as at first pass I might see myself being happy with them and selling my ECF's (did I just say that?). Hope this helps. Cheers

Agreed about MattTCG and he's somewhat funny looking TBH. But the review was pretty good. Did anyone pickup the "moist" reference when he was ranting about the state of prices in the hobby? Hilarious. :p

@mscott58 - this makes me wish that I could dislike on HF:

    "Gift"? Seriously? Fanboy much?

If these don't sound underwhelming (like the Ether C), they could be extremely profitable. They're aimed squarely at an under-served sweet spot, in a very premeditated manner. It's just business. Fang abandoned this segment, someone has to clean up. It may as well be someone who isn't a total dick. I think a lot of us will watch this particular one with interest.

I posted the question on that head-fi topic for which mscott responded to, fully expecting to get a couple hilarious responses from the head-fi populace, and I guess I got just that.

Dan runs a company, his sole purpose is to make money . He's not deliberately pricing the Aeon at 800 dollars with a 700 dollar pre-order price for charity, he's doing it becuase he knows he can sell even more of them compared to other outrageously gouged prices in the hobby. Although I guess in a world of 6000 dollar flagships made from balsa wood and windows screens, an 800 dollar headphone looks like a free gift-- seriously, Dan must be taking a loss on this one, guys.

Touche. Yeah, I should have worded that one better and/or bit my tongue. The "gift" comment actually came from Dan when I was talking to him at NYC, and was partially tied to the $100 discount on the first 250 units, as well as not continually climbing the price ladder like some. I actually was more pissed that the HF'er I was responding to was telling Dan how to handle his product design and such and I did fall into fan-boy territory in being lured into the trap. Point taken. Cheers

Dan still has an underlying motive to offer the headphone at a 100 dollar discount for the first couple hundred sold. The headphone doesn't get released for a couple of months. A 100 dollar discount in addition to pre-release hype from impressions and reviews will give him a surge of money without the headphones even being released yet. Lots of companies give pre-order 'perks,' but I wouldn't consider them as gifts, moreso strategy. He might be saying it's his 'gift' back to the community, but as a businessman, he has to maintain a certain amount of PR with people.

Clearly Dan is a very smart guy and he's not being purely altruistic with the release of the AEON, even with the $100 discount. He's seen bad business decisions in his past (his background is quite interesting and he's got some scar tissue that have taught him), so I would be surprised if he was losing money with the AEON, even at the launch price. He's likely not making nearly as much as he could, although this is clearly made up by the higher volume of sales. Is he profit maximizing? Is he in love with the market and putting out good products? I'd say it's a mix. Cheers

My god, those measurements boosted my interest from meh to mouthwatery. I hope they can deliver! I'll be watching these very closely from now on.

Why meh before? Bad experience with the C's in the past?

    I have a HD25 Aluminium and I am ready for a step-up.

Thus I find the SINE and the AEON very intriguing. Haven't heard both of them so far.

Any thoughts on similarities and differences?

I don't think that is his sole purpose. I think Dan genuinely enjoys his work, employing people, and making good products that people enjoy. You make him sound soulless.

I own the SINEs and listened to the AEONs for a bit at NYC this weekend. They're quite different HP's.

The SINE is an on-ear planar that is made to be highly portable (e.g. it folds flat) and at a lower price-point ($449). The on-ear part makes it not that comfortable to most, and while it sounds decent, you know that you're trading off SQ (at least to me) in the pursuit of portability.

The AEON is on over-the-ear planar that is made to be somewhat more portable (although it does not fold flat or anything) and at a lower price-point ($699 now, $799 full retail). It's super-comfortable, even more so than the Ethers, has a SQ that to my ear is superior to the SINE, and is better made than the SINEs (had one break on me).

So it really depends on how you want to use the HP, how much you have to spend, and what your SQ preferences are. I personally am going to sell my SINE eventually and am seriously considering buying the AEON, even though I have an Ether C Flow already.

In full transparency I also have an LCD-3F, so I do have experience with both Mr. Speakers and Audeze, and I respect both companies.

    Cheers

fully agree...things are going crazy priced esp when you add in a decent DAC and amp...etc.
and that many of us have both cans and iems adds even more to the costs of keeping up and trying
    to stay currrent.
like the US2700 iems by Empire Ears Zeus Adel xr
(not including 'better cables' if you want to go down that wormhole, or impressions, or taxes etc)
    http://www.empireears.com/product/custom-zeus-xr-adel/
or the upcoming Audeze lcd ic3 for $2500 ,to be released in the summer.

    same with cans...prices getting just crazy priced....audeze lcd4...hifiman 6K

with so much trickle down tech i think $1k (and under) is a huge sweet spot for many...
otherwise for me it's buy used.

I hope the Aeon gets fab ratings, resulting in huge sales, and thus sends a clear signal
to others about this important price point that many fall into.

I'm not sure that I need to be current, I just want nice-sounding music. My HD650M and HD800SDR are pretty dated, after all. However, a decent-quality closed planar might just scratch an itch, if it's good.
