Hello from Massachusetts!
Current set up PC > Gustard x20 > Jotunheim > Senn650
I am currently having a headphone psychosis i think.
Head-fi makes me paranoid.
I´m having nightmares about Asian people trying to steal my headphone collection.
Welcome, we offer medications for that. In the mean time, please do make sure to stay away from sharp objects.
After stumbling to SBAF (I am very clumsy) and reading around the forums, I realized there is much more informed feedback than on Head-Fi. The community knows each other's tastes so there is a reference point. Equipment is both praised and criticized, as opposed to "match made in heaven" "no flaws" "giant killer" impressions that turn to "I sold it" "just couldn't stand it" "this new toy is head & shoulders above" after a few months. Bullschiit is faced head on, which might seem dickish at first, but at least it's not allowed to fester. It makes for a cleaner, less spammed forums. E.g., SBAF's Jotunheim forum thread told me more in 50 pages than Head-Fi's 200+.
Of course, this is my intro to every new forum, so there is that.
I have a HE-560 and MA900 and waiting for Pulse Infinity 2+ years now, with no delivery in sight. That planar is not meant to be driven directly from PC, believe me... Every time a cymbal strikes I spill my coffee and dfg kugh iasygf ... ouch, there goes my coffee again... so very clumsy...
Cheers from Japan!
Feel better already
Could not agree more.. Well put!
Welcome to SBAF guys!!
I've been a member for a few months now and lurked for a while before that, but never got around to posting in this thread. So here I am!
Started out in this hobby in 2007 with an Alessandro MS-1 and Beyer DT770 when I was a freshman in college so that my new roommate wouldn't have to hear my tunes. Currently settled down with an Yggdrasil + Jotunheim + modded HD650. Despite loving this setup, I enjoy window-shopping and searching for "what's next".
Music interest is mostly centered around guitars/rock (think Mark Knopfler, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Alex Lifeson/Rush) with healthy doses of jazz and classical orchestral.
Welcome to SBAF!!
I have been looking to get a bedside rig for some time to replace/enhance my Synology DS214>IPad>Nuforce ICON iDO>Senn 598 setup.
I was fortunate to find SBAF and have been lurking and absorbing info from the various forums on potential upgrade options. I have enjoyed the frank and open discussions and the general no bullshit attitude.
Santa was kind enough to deliver a HD650, so I am now looking for a DAC+amp to pair with them. I am currently leaning towards a Mimby+Joti pairing which I believe will provide a good pairing with the HD650s. I understand that the HD650s work great with tubes so am also considering the Val2 vs the Joti.
My son is into Lego in a big way and I was very happy to read the Lego posts which have provided some great ideas for future builds.
Do you mean Valhalla 2 or Vali 2 when you say "Val2"?
Can't comment much on the Valhalla 2 vs. the Joti, but I would definitely take the Joti over the Vali 2, particularly with balanced cabling into the HD650.
A few months ago Sorrodjie announced SBAF to me and voila - I'm in now!
I became a headphones fan several years ago and through the time I collected Beyerdynamic DT-880 (600 Ohm), Sennheiser HD-650 and now Audeze LCD-2. What about amplifiers - I'd prefer to build them myself - I have 4-5 different designs (all Solid State!) in a different stage of finishing - from fully finished devices to laying on a wooden board (testbed) . I like to experiment with different topologies, power supplies, regulators etc.
I'm not leaning towards cable replacement (although I do not deny it) or parts directions (I confess - I still do not reach this level of knowledge) - I prefer to build my projects with as ordinary parts as possible and probably at the end to put a higher-quality ones in the right places.
Well, I almost forgot it - I'm a man who stands behind ATLHIFI - I saw some remarks about my designs in the topic for "Power regenerators etc.....".

I discovered SBAF after Googling topics and finding some interesting and informed discussions here.
I am a longtime (multi-decade) audiophile with a Linn-Naim system. However, due to circumstances (getting married, moving, having a child), my system went into storage and has been logistically problematic to try to set up again. I've been venturing more into headphones to continue my interest in audio. I have a Jotunheim, Sennheiser HD6XX (Massdrop), and Master & Dynamic MW60. I've also been a longtime user of Yuin earbuds and interested in exploring other earbud and in-ear units.
I am portable audio lover who is looking to have intelligent and balanced conversations on gear, without extreme hype / extreme hostility. I have owned / tried quite a lot of portable gear but in no way consider myself an expert at anything except knowing what I like and dislike. And what I like is mostly pretty gear and music.
@Metro and @Mimouille welcome both to SBAF!
Hey Michael, good to see you here!
I've been half-heartedly participating in the audiophile hobby for over a decade but recently decided to step it up and enjoy the experience more fully.
In college I built some guitar effects pedals from scratch and worked in aviation electronics so I'm handy with basic electrical concepts and the use of a soldering iron (or a welding torch).
I work in studio recording and voiceovers so I've owned some nice mic preamps and video gear but have only had a minimal system at home(s). I currently have an original Schiit Magni/Modi stack that I purchased in 2013 but have added an LCD-2 and Dragonfly Red this year.
I hope to drop US$3k in the next few months on a second set of over ears, an amp, and probably a Gungnir MB.
I like listening to shoegazing electronica (Ulrich Schnauss), classic and modern jazz, indie rock, and anything well produced.
Welcome to SBAF!!
@Mimouille Welcome Michael, good to see you hear bro!!
