The egalitarian in me says this is crap, but the economist in me says this does make sense. The Audioperson in me goes, huh, what sounds good sounds good?

@Marvey You should call them to add Eddie Current. God knows Craig sacrifices margins just to get it done local.

The website seems to just be providing information. I like it.

Where something is made is one factor that I take into consideration when I make a purchase.

    My stereo (2-channel):
    Cartridge - USA
    Tonearm - England
    Turntable - USA
    Turntable Stand - USA
    Preamp - USA
    CD Player - Japan
    Equipment Stand - England
    Power Amp - Taiwan
    Speakers - USA
    Speaker Stands - USA
    Cables - USA (?)

    Headphone system:
    Headphones - Ireland (4), China (1)
    DAC - USA
    Amps - USA

    Laptop - China

Sound Dynamics were a great speaker company - designed and built in Canada.

Sad to see them go out of business. I had a pair of 300ti stolen recently. Those were something. They sounded really nice, in general. The bass kick was mystifying to me. Not loud bass - they had great impact. They seemed to move a lot of air from a 7 or 8 inch woofer.

Their RTS-3 were very nice smaller speakers.

    hello,

my understanding is that back in the day, Altec-Lansing, Fisher, JBL, Klipsche, Marantz, and McIntosh pretty much defined the high end (for two channel at least.)

this was a time of American hegemony in audio equipment.

it is also my understanding that these folks made some really good Schiit.

to me this makes a lot of sense. i much rather my USD's go to USW's (workers.)

one of the absolutely incredible things about Schiit Audio is that they can make such high value products in the good ole USA employing American workers.

if these makers can recapture that reputation for building the best of the best, and offer their products at competitive products internationally everyone wins.

i hope this doesn't come off as jingoistic. (i would only drive German cars if i could.);)

I would think the economist in you would be all about free trade and increasing international participation

I think that sustainability is always a consideration, labor being an inelastic factor of production. That is, if there are no jobs here, everything declines in the midterm and long run. Free trade is good for overall market efficiency, but there are victims, nonetheless. There are also unintended consequences, as the shift of research and base support industries along with the manufacturing base, leading to a further spiral. Admittedly that is a lesser concern, but one with serious long term implications.

There has to be a concerted effort to address and ameliorate the displaced's situation, or the rise of supra nationalistic xenophobia becomes more likely, to the detriment of everyone. Communication efficiencies reduce the value of proximity, and wage regimes, being what they are, make globalization inevitable.
Society is always better served by an equitable distribution of income, but really people like to see a rise in real income, not just a bigger number. And no one wants to be making less than they were last year,

Making it in America has pluses and minuses, but it's infinitely harder.

Jingoism off, ignore if this offends you, no malice intended.

This is weird, I just figured out that the only non American thing I am running now are my tonearm, my Senns and the notebook. Everything else is American branded (I think the CD player and preamp were designed offshore, though). Huh, and my previous stuff is American also. Interesting finding, for me, as it was never intentional.

You probably did the same as most people- bought things that sounded good, rather than foaming at the mouth in a jingoistic way. It just so happens that 'murica sometimes makes really nice audio gear, towards the boutique end.

(..and then there's Schiit, who are a bit of an aberration, no-one can explain them :bird:)

oh and I was mainly commenting on how most economists tend to think about this. Not so much on whether it's healthy economically.

I tend to apply affirmative action when it comes to things like this. Meaning if product X and Y are the same in terms of price, features, etc. and only differ by country of origin, then I go for the local product.

f**k that. The dude running the site probably wants money or a free EC loaner for keeps. The site looks too polished for making America great again as a free service.

There is no dearth of great high end audio made in the USA. I'm all for America f**k Yeah! Because it's a lot better than Self-Kaboom f**k Yeah! But I'm not falling for that shtick. May as well make a website dedicated to listing great American technology or theatrical content companies.

P.S. There is no such thing as made in X or Y anymore. Global supply chain.

I read this and my broken heart bled again. I really miss my Sound Dynamics R515's that I sold a couple years ago. I'm sorry to hear about the theft, that's way worse.

Reading this thread makes it worse because truly American Made (or Canadian in my case) speakers are harder to come by today. I think I was 16 when I bought those speakers along with a Pioneer stereo receiver and Sony CD player (it was the early 90's IIRC).

I think they went to a good home at least. The buyer was going to add them as the rear channel for his system and decided he'd throw them up front instead after I played him some test tracks. Oh well, "better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all". Those things gave me way more joy than my Alpha Dogs ever did and that is what I want from my next pair of headphones. Sigh.
