I agree there is not an equality, but surely there is a correlation. We like good content, and so many posts with good content have a high number of likes. As a discovery mechanism I reckon it could be pretty useful.

 

I have lurked here for quite a while which is my style, I don't participate in forums much. I recently joined SBAF because I had a question about a piece of equipment and this seemed like a FRIENDLY place to ask it. I got a great response which I appreciated and yes it was friendly. In reading through this thread it seems like what is desired is a private club type of setup where prospective members will have to go through a vetting and initiation process to be taken on board as a friend. To me that would remove the "Friendly" from SBAF and substitute snotty and exclusive. In the wild west of the internet there will always be people you don't agree with and trolls, to take it to the extreme. I am on a few forums where there is an ignore feature but I don't tend to use it because sometimes even people I would like to ignore have a moment of insight. SBAF might be having a midlife crisis but don't take the FRIENDLY out f this site in trying to fix things!

 

Ironically, you should probably have had the courtesy to post a brief introduction as requested, before telling people how to run the site. "Friendly" is two-way.

 

Now explain how a duck and a witch both stay afloat in water without using Medieval nonsense...

Then explain how coconuts migrate...

If you accomplish those two things you are either mad or King Arthur from another dimension.

 

I ran some scripts on the HD650 mods thread and the Jotunheim impressions thread to find the most liked posts. Still some manual selection needed to get just the good content, but it's quicker than wading through 40-50 pages of thread.

This is not a bad idea. It would make even more sense if there were two different kinds of like buttons; "like" and "useful". Because they're not always one and the same.

Here's an example of a site which uses something similar. The most popular comments are on the right: http://techreport.com/

In the case of "useful" comments it could be that the top comments for that thread are displayed on the right when you open it.

In the case of "likes" it's possible it could be global and displayed on the right of the front page and valid for the last 72h. Of course I don't know the limitation of our current forum and how much work this would be, or if it's possible at all with what we have.

And there should probably also be a "like" ceiling of some kind. We don't want to foster a culture of karma whores.

Again - I know this site is essentially a hobby project. There are no obligations, we're just bouncing ideas.

 

The thing is, when you're dealing with an already established, tight-knit community with certain standards like this one, the onus is on you to show that you can fit in before you can expect others to be friendly towards you. Sure, it's great if those people are nice right away, but they're not obligated to be -- they don't even know who you are.

If you then force that community to adopt an open-door, "friendly at all costs" approach, you turn it into a low-brow retail store that relegates its experienced members to door-greeting duties. That also attracts lazy and/or rude customers who are convinced that they're always right, despite lacking any knowledge or sense of decorum. Take a look at other audio communities elsewhere, and you'll see that this is exactly what's happened.

In other words, if a community is too friendly to everyone, people will take advantage of it, and the more that happens, the less valuable the community becomes overall. It's better to make sure you attract the right people to begin with.

 

You are making an error. Instead, you should grant a CONDITIONAL registration and acceptance. Because of, as you said, 2% you will not accept 98% ? That is an erroneous reasoning. This audio forum should not become a Freemasonic lodge.
Also, to gain a revenue, you should have a dedicated corner in which manufacturers could introduce new audio products.
