Very impressed with these. To me the finish is much nicer than the standard 650 too, very dark, it would be a stretch to call them blue at all.

Did some quick measurements for the hell of it

    HD6XX L/R

    VS. HD800S matched @ 1kHz

VS HD800S/DT880 250ohm matched @ 1kHz (that's not normally how the bass measures on the Beyers, but those are the only plots I have available and I no longer have the headphones)

With the KISS mod to tame the midbass a little bit I don't see myself needing another pair of headphones, maybe just a new cable.

A little (more) warmth comes as pads conform. Stays clear and dynamic, though.

UKers thinking of shopping with Massdrop may want to use their own freight forwarding arrangements. The UK end of the delivery of my 6xx is being handled by Yodel - a courier company so terrible that they changed their name to try and shed their reputation for unreliability and losing packages. It's nothing to be proud of, to be voted "worst parcel delivery service".

My 6xx entered the country on December 22nd. It was only because I noticed from the tracking that it was stuck in customs that I knew this- I was not contacted. I did some phoning around, and worked out how to pay, and did so in the 29th. Since then, it has been Yodel's responsibility, and it hasn't been scanned for three days. I contacted them to ask why, and they admitted that they didn't know where it was, and would need to conduct a "base search".

This is pretty much in line with prior experiences with Yodel- generally I avoid doing business with companies who use them, as it's very hard to get them to actually deliver parcels reliably. I've made two orders with Massdrop so far, but either wouldn't have ordered, or used a forwarding service, had I known that Yodel would be involved.

@CEE TEE - any chance of alternative shipping options for Massdrop, for example, using UPS, who don't contract their deliveries out?

@chakku if you shine a white light on the headband like the flash from your phone, the blue color is more apparent.

Blue phosphor ("white") LEDs brings out more blue.

I can ask how your package got to Yodel and if that is part of any plan moving forward or if that is in the improvement plan for 2017 to change. Not a bad idea to go to transactions and report issue with Yodel, the specific instance can be referenced if needed and the number of issues tracked closely. If I ask on the side it will not necessarily be tracked. Did you receive your HD6XX? (Sorry it took a while to see this, holidays and CES slowed my surfing...)

Yeah, it might be worth working out why your stuff is going via Yodel- it's never a good thing. They're pretty awful, and quite a few people avoid pulling the trigger if they know their purchase will be going via Yodel. Given that MD has a decent reputation for customer service, you probably don't need this extra hassle. I'm really worried that the Noble X IEMs will go via these assclowns too, and get lost/stolen.

It's not just the financial loss (the price of the cans plus about $50 in import tax), but you're selling cool not-available-elsewhere stuff, of course, I can't just replace them locally.

OK, I raised a support issue on Massdrop.com now. No, the package hasn't been delivered- it was scanned being loaded onto a van on the 7th of January, and there has been no sign of it since. Yesterday, when I contacted Yodel, they didn't know where the package was, or why it hadn't been scanned for days.

Thanks for the response, though. It's probably good idea if you look into why your stuff is being sent by Yodel, they are assclowns, and it sort of makes Massdrop a non-starter for us filthy foreign devils in the UK if your shippers are using them- way too likely for there to be problems.

Not wishing to labour the point, but I agree, Yodel are appalling. I've had some amp-breakage issues with them in the past. I also wouldn't generally order from a company that uses Yodel.

    Slight update:

I don't know if it's an effect of me prodding them over social media, bugging their service people, or some sort of secret rocket that Massdrop have used, but tracking claims to have delivered the 6xx to my workplace. I'll see if I can get there tomorrow. We may be in business finally and strangely conveniently.

If it was your guys, @CEE TEE - thanks! If it wasn't, then thanks for showing willing to knock heads together anyhow. Definitely try to avoid using Yodel though, there's a potential reputation damage and support load from doing so.

    Edit:

Also, Yodel suck balls because they re-addressed the package and forgot the company name, so it almost got mis-routed on delivery, several companies on that campus. They fail at the basics, time and again.

I just got a reterminated stock cable into a 4-pin XLR, which goes into the Jotunheim. There is more difference than I would have imagined. I won't say it is a significant difference, but everything seems a bit faster, a bit punchier, and the added effect is that it's even more enjoyable to listen to.

HD6XX is definitely not same as HD650 sonically.
HD650 has better resolution, weighty tone, better headstage and scale, dirtier bass though, better edge definition, more agreeable decay. The differences might be due to HD6XX being new with not more than 4-5 hours of use. But I do not remember HD650 changing sound over time. Anyways the difference are more than subtle.

The HD6XX cable is inferior as well. It looks identical but definitely sounds worse than the stock HD650 cable....Blurry, thick tone
Off topic but Cardas cable on both is a waste. Shifts tonal signature quite a bit.

    Oh, hi, man!
May I resuggest clamp? Can you please compare the clamp of the two headphones?
Get both pair headphones equally extended and compare the resting position. Like, the distance between the cups. Make sure all 4 cups are rotated upwards to the limit for an acurate measurement.
If you provide this data point we can eliminate or confirm clamp as a culprit for the subjective difference you described.
What other parts could be different between the two models, I wonder.

Note that the box on the HD6XX states in fine print HD650. So yes, they are most likely the exact same headphone.

I think you're hearing things again, though give it time. Drivers do at least have some moving parts...

The 6XX measurements posted here and on innerfidelity do show some slight differences from previously measured 650 samples, so *maybe* something was going on with this production run.

That said, pad break-in could account for the differences you are hearing, particularly the "weighty" tone.

Haven't both headphones shown identical measurements?

As I recall, the one measured here by Marv showed more 3rd order harmonic distortion.

I mean, unit variances exist and Tyll's measurements suggest they are more or less the same headphone. You can see similar irregularities in just about any headphone, like the various HD800 and HD800S measurements Tyll has done. (Keeping in mind that Sennheiser's attention to driver matching, especially for their flagship)

Slightly off-topic but why is it I always see something along the lines of "the difference are more than subtle" when it comes to things like cables, magical pebbles and GUTB mods? (On head-fi, that is)

The 6XX measured exactly the same as a recent HD650 I purchased. My old HD650, which I sold off, didn't have the highish 3rd order in the bass and had an FR which was a tiny bit different. Could be running changes on the part of Sennheiser.

Yep, that is the only reason I can think of.
The 650 is fairly new as well, not more than 100 hours on it. Although the pads have now squished and sits closer to the ear than the 6xx.
I initially wasn't going to post accouting the differences due to pad breakin however, i dont remember HD 650 sounding like HD 6xx while it was new.
