Should Schiit make a portable battery powered multibit DAC/amp

  1. Hell yeah! I'd buy one the minute it is available. Please take my money Jason!

  2. No way. I'd rather buy overpriced stuff that has been fully vetted by the British hifi press.

That's the definition of 10 pounds of Schiit in a 5 pound bag. It would be pretty chunky--probably bigger than a Modi.

You know there is something wrong with you when you think... "Well, that doesn't sound too big."

Hm... can you make a multibit DAC around the size of Modi that takes either an external power supply unit or a battery... or both? Sounds like more pieces to carry, and probably will stack to be much taller than Modi, but it doesn't sound like people are too averted to stacking... seeing as I've seen some do Magni on top of Modi on top of Wyrd...

Then again, maybe I'm just dreaming...

Hugo sized would be fine. Doesn't need to be multibit. The AKM 4490 is pretty darn good.

What about the filter? That's probably the most important part, getting the enchilada filter in there running at 16/44.1 would be cool. Modibit, hmm. Maybe double sided circuitboard'd do the trick. It'd end up stupid looking and tall I bet, but if that's the price we gotta pay. :p

Probably bigger than a Modi? Probably?

I think he means definitely because the casework is already done and it's in the works right now. If Moffat wasn't trying, or hasn't tried to make something better out of the Modi, he needs a gentle slap to the face.

For whatever my opinion is worth, I think this is a challenging product to make worthwhile. For awhile I really tried to make such a device work for me, and I tried quite a few of them. But in the end I thought my iPhone 6 Plus had higher quality sound. My findings:
Fiio e10k - dirty, hissy, and weak and worse than anything I've ever heard
Fiio e17k - weak sound, unflattering tone. Only the SNR was improved vs iPhone
Fiio e18 - More robust sound than e17k, and than iPhone, but also sounded kinda dirty, and it only sounded different, not better than anything. Probably suitable for improving a crappy sounding laptop though.
Teac HA-P50 - At first I loved this device. It was a big step up in overall clarity, and smoothness, and it had more power than the iPhone. But it sucked out a lot of the midrange, so we had to part ways.
Still, I plan to visit B&H to audition the Fostex HP-P1 which I've heard a lot of really good things about, but at $320-400, its also double the price or more.
Hope I'm not stepping on any toes - this is just my own experience. I would definitely want to hear a device like this if Schitt released one. The other challenge is making it portable enough for people who want to bring it on the train. At least that's my own wishes - since it seems hard to justify the product otherwise vs getting the ODAC and O2, which I preferred easily over all the above devices in regards to nearly any way you would compare sound quality

I don't want the DAC part. A good enough portable Schiit amp will cause an onslaughtering of FiiO crap.

well if anyone can make a portable DAC/AMP sound good it would be Schiit. like @Griffon - I'd be happy with a portable Schiit amp without the DAC -but then again I could just get a Magni 2 or Vali - but you need money and an outlet for those lol. A battery powered Amp a little smaller than the vali or magni would be sweet. Have the battery be lithium-ion rechargeable. Charge it at home through an outlet or usb -then take it on the go. Cypher labs has some really nice DAC/AMP portable rechargeable units that are very small but sound really good with plenty of power to drive 300 ~ 600 Ohm cans.

Last time I remembered @CEE TEE trying to contact him. Maybe it's time that we try again? His new amp has been in the works for god knows how long.

UHA-6s.mk ii show's "temporarily out of stock". UHA-760 shows "sold out". Only the UHA-4 is listed as available for ordering. Not sure what the distinction is between "temporarily out of stock" and "sold out" would be other than to think that the 6 will be back and perhaps the 760 won't.

Yeah, has been a long time since I checked in. Surprised that it is taking such a long time but Nick did move from Austin to Portland I think.
I have the 6S and a V2+ Infinity on the way so I am not anxiously pursuing anymore. Though it would make my little iPhone 4S > 6S Mk. II stack more pocketable...
