I owned Teac UD-301 some time ago. It is similar to UD-501 and produces almost the same sound. I don't think Teac is horrible. But nothing outstanding.
Contrary I've found highly praised Modi Multibit disappointing while using it with PC: the most shitty usb I've ever met, messing with drivers, requirement to keep it always on. And I didn't feel that I got something special in sound in return, so it is gone quite quickly.
But I admit that it could be different story If using Modi with dedicated S/PDIF source.

Thank you for a bit of good news on the TEAC. I will not use USB on any DAC if I can avoid it. I am planning to try Modi Multibit with SPDIF coax to RPi 3 Digi + Pro and Toslink to my PC.

I got both, Modi Multibit two weeks ago and Teac today. Now listening to Teac through the Nuforce HA-200 monoblocks and T5p.2 DIY balanced cable (mogami, Eidolic connectors). It will take time before I figure out this DAC, particularly that T5p.2 is the only headphone I have with me right now with balanced cables - 32 Ohms hyper sensitive Tesla is not a good match for those amps. I will need my HE500 and HD800S and really spend some time listening.
I paid $690 for the whole setup (new Teac and used HA-200) so I suppose I will not loose much if I do not like it.
