I was considering the Decware Torii Jr, which is 20 watts and uses EL34 tubes for output and has power filtering tubes as well. I'm also looking at amps from Line Magnetic and EAR as well.

Thats perfection! That Schick on that 401 is a match of epic proportions. Is that a DAS Audio plinth you have there? If not, which one?

Anyhow, I was struggling with a crazy hum that I could not get rid of last night with my Schick. Then, on a whim, I just plugged the tonearm into my Altec Peerless 4722 Step ups and hum GONE!!! Hate all the different grounding shenanigans one has to pull off to get rid of phono hum (if you get it). There is no one way....trial and error like crazy basically.

So now the Classic GM II E SPU is on the Schick! :) No Anti skating (I didn't get one with my arm) and actually is not at all preferred by Thomas either. This arm is going to be for SPU carts only, so I won't need it anyhow. If you are going to use any modern cartridge in a headshell, you MIGHT want to use it. I just increase my tracking force by another 0.1 or 0.2 grams over recommended (which is 3.5 grams for this SPU), and that works just fine.

I'm super happy as all my tables now have their appropriate tonearms on them (Woodsong Garrard Greasebearing 301 with Ikeda 407 12" and SME 3009R, Steve Dobbins 301 oil bearing with Triplanar VII, Redpoint with Helius Silver Ruby and Schick 12", EAR Discmaster with Helius Silver Ruby and Kuzma 4 Point, Townshend Rock 7 with Helius Copper, Micro Seiki BL 91L with SME 3012 Series II Early Version, VPI TNT 6 "Hot Rod" with three JMW 12.5 metal tonearms, Kenwood KD500 with Infinity Black Widow tonearm). I have two Schroeder Reference 12" tonearms as well that are setup in Custom Pods. That will happen soon when I get around to it.

That's all the analog source gear basically.

Basically, went from not have an arm setup on the 12" pod (as the Ikeda 407 was moved to the Woodsong Garrard 301):

Daniel, the Decware stuff sounds really good! You are thinking along the right path. Plus you mentioned Line Magnetic that I am damn impressed with as well! I like the way you think!

I might pick up some Line Magnetic gear for fun, but I'm noticing that I am picking up too much stuff for "fun" and then I get buried in gear....too much good stuff out there. Another line I might get into in the future with properly matched speakers would be the Shindo line. Likely with Shindo Latour speakers...only if wife gives me separate permanent bedroom I can take in the house! LOL

Well if you ever decide you have too much stuff for fun and want to unload, you know who to call! :D

The biggest strike against Line Magnetic for me is there are no dealers in my entire state. I'd have to go to San Francisco to find the nearest dealer.

Man, that is ridiculous. Cartridge destroyed because of some f**k head not being considerate! People just don't care and it amazes me. A master, who is dead and gone, left behind a handmade product. It should be respected and taken care with the same level of pride and honor. That is simply dishonorable in my mind...

Well, I can tell you, the Koetsu Rosewood Signature built by Sugano San Sr. is a great great cartridge. I was listening to it two days ago on my Townshend Rock 7. They sound notably different from the new Koetsu Rosewood Signatures and Signature Platinums built by his sons today.

Might as well post a picture of the headphone setup I threw together. I'm telling ya'll having gear sitting around makes one feel guilty! So no more guilt this way....plus sharing pics is fun. A glimpse into the analog porn we all dig...

@Wfojas , this has the Koetsu Rosewood Signature (Sugano Sr.) setup on it ;)

I'd rather make the trip for a listening/hang session than to try to buy an amp!

That Townshend rock is a beaut, @shaizada . One should be so lucky to have your guilt. Having heard one years ago, i remember how appropriate the name was. Question on older Koetsus, do they coils dry out over time? That must have at the latest been from the early 2000s? I've come across a few offers over the years for Sugano Sr. built carts, and have always paused due to possible issues from age.

You are thinking along the right lines. If it has been just sitting, it would take a few plays to let the suspension loosen up again. If a suspension is bad, you will know by how the cartridge sags and falls. I say get one from someone you trust or is reputable and enjoy it.

Everyone must own/listen to a Koetsu at least once in their life :) It just is one of those hallmarks of analog.

I doubt I would ever let go my B-52, BUT if I did, you'll know about it.

    Cheers!

Don't look for cheap vintage tables. Vintage tables are fantastic actually (depending on what you get), but go with one that has been gone over and serviced. If not, plan on getting it serviced before you really dive in.

@spwath - I saw a bunch on Craigslist. Just apply the same level of scrutiny and research you do when buying vintage gear.

Yesterday I finally found the time and courage to see if the NA Space Deck still worked. To cut right to it, it does work, though the motor wouldn't start up initially and gave me a scare. I took apart the hefty power plug and found a wire had come loose in there, fixed that right up and the table started spinning properly. It took me about 2 hours to follow the awful NA instructions and set the table up, but it was breeze to align the cart using Mofi's GeoDisc. It just works.

I was getting a weird hum from the right channel and managed to isolate it to the ground spade. Connected, the right channel hums. Disconnected, the hum is much softer. If any one has any advice for me on how to get rid of it completely, please share.

I don't know exactly what it is because a lot (actually, all) of my rig has changed since I last had the Space Deck, but this set up sounds straight dopamine-releasing good.

Try touching the right channel's RCA's outer metal with your finger and touching a metal part of the phono pre's chassis with your thumb. Effectively grounding the right channel RCA's shielding. It's worked for me in the past with various phono pre's. I've had to open the case and solder a jumper from the outer RCA connect to the chassis to solve humm
