Those are analogue outputs not AES out though.

I wouldn't say that's a widespread take but my personal preference would be to just get a custom 1/4" to XLR cable from blue jeans cable or whatever and skip the adapter.

Quick update for everyone who has placed a pre-order for the 502DAC. First, all units shipped will be the P4 revision without HP AMP, and with 2-wire terminal. All else is the same. Second, we had a delay getting the NDK 24.576Mhz low jitter oscillators from our normal source. Ended up buying them at 3x the price, but we didn't want any further delays. We are building them this week, a bit later than expected. Finally, we are building at least 100 so stock won't be an issue for awhile.

Huge thanks again to everyone who alpha/beta tested and gave feedback, as well as all you folks who gave your thoughts and ideas and complaints. It all made for a better product. We plan to do this again with our PiBox Configurable Network Streamer. And yes, it will have XLR balanced AES output!

    Cheers,
    Michael

Good news on the build schedule. First 20 units are being tested now and will ship Monday. Next 20 will be ready mid next week. Then the next 50 are week after next.

    Regards,
    Michael

It took a long time, but I finally am with ether net cable connected to the pi + hat. I also changed from a Stagedac to a Gungnir Multibit.

Alas, I fear the 502 dac board might be the culprit. I still can't play hires files. I am not using wifi, it is turned off. I have also changed dacs, And still there is a problem. HiRes files pop click and then drop out all together. Redbook still sounds great though.

    Any ideas? @Scott Kramer ? @Michael Kelly ?

It is possible it is defective. We have another batch shipping next week. Go ahead and return yours (mail is fine, just send a tracking number to [email protected]) and we'll ship another one ASAP.

    Cheers,
    Michael

Thanks Michael. Actually since I am back in Europe, I might want to try one more thing. I realized that although the cable from the board to the dac is brand new, that is the only thing I haven't tried to switch yet. Unfortunately, now I need to find a BNC/RCA converter because my other s/pdif cable is RCA/RCA . I have to go into Perpignan, the closest city (still 45 minutes) early next week so maybe I can find something there...

Have you tried using a USB cable to connect your Pi to your dac? If it works as expected with the same hi res files then you can probably rule out the network or Pi itself for your issue. If you think the cable may be faulty then you could try wiggling it around while playing to see if there's an intermittent fault but I'm not sufficiently versed in cable voodoo to know why it'd happen with some files and not others.

Now that I think of it though, didn't someone earlier in thread say they had issues with hi res files due to the BNC legs getting too close to the USB port housing and after they trimmed them things were good (promoting Michael to start trimming them in house with newer revisions)?

Thanks a million @haywood ! Don't know how I missed that. But guess what? I clipped the bnc legs and now I am hearing hires over wifi...

Only problem is I lost one of the tiny screws. Shouldn't be doing this at 2.30 in the morning I suppose. But problem is solved. YAY!

I am really sorry you went through this. For some reason the Pi3 I test with has a lower USB connector. We never had this issue in testing any of the boards. But, as @haywood mentioned, we are trimming them all at the factory now.

    Cheers,
    Michael

@Michael Kelly it's all good now... I even found the screw first thing in the morning. All I needed was some sunlight ;)

you need a 1 minute screw finder aka hipower flashlight from fasttech, about 10 bucks I drop lots of tiny screws and widgets. This helps day and night [IMG]

Downloaded Hysolid player for my Win10 USB to regen to Modi Multibit. Very nice software but the pi + 502 dac still wins easily. I don't think any USB will be able to outperform it.

    Hi Michael,

So happy to know that I am finally able to order one for myself after lurking on the forums for so long!!!

I've been following this thread since December, but have only signed in as a member recently.

BTW, will members who have been following this thread in the forum still have an opportunity at a discount? It's OK either way for me (you sold me on the way this product has been designed and bugs weeded out systematically over the past few months), but I thought I'd ask in case it was possible.

Please do PM me if so; if there aren't any new coupon codes or you're not able to reply me in the next day, I'll put in an order for the full amount by tomorrow.

Thanks again for a great product!

    Carl.

Anyone find a suitable case for this yet? I know you can 3D print it but, I have no idea how to get that done.

Probably in a week I will receive my 502DAC and I want to be prepared for it so I talked to a friend that makes custom cables.
I want to make sure the connections of the cable are done right so I can link the digital balanced output of the 502DAC to the AES digital input of my Aune S16 DAC. Is this correct in the image below? Thank you all

    That is correct. :)

BTW, there are other users who might be interested in this cable as well. Perhaps your friend is willing to offer some for sale?

    Cheers,
    Michael

Do you have any recommended cables (as far as impedance, shielding, etc)? I can be of service for building some adapters, but normally make interconnects and headphone cables where it doesn't matter as much.
