Request for HD800S Loaner

I would like to request an HD800S Loaner for SBAF.

I've not heard the HD 800S, but I have heard a @Bill-P modded HD 800... it was breath taking, left me with a better more memorable impression than the Focal Utopia, yes technically the Utopia is/was better but the Bill-P modded HD 800 pulled me in more

@Marvey modded my HD800 with the Z28 Mod (he put straws inside the earcups to act like resonators. Is @Bill-P 's mod better?

 

bill's mods is way more extensive and sounds great. the 800S is like a worse version of the 800 with SDR in it. not significantly different enough but that's like my opinion man.

 

Wait, why am I here? This must be like a time tunnel of some sort. I vaguely recall modding the HD800 like... last year or so. Hahaha!

But yeah, maybe I should take the opportunity to record the details of what I do to your HD800 to post what I did to the other HD800s that I modded. It's not like I meant for them to be a secret. I was just too lazy to take photos and post instructions.

Edit: but on that note, a HD800S loaner may also be a good idea (if budget allows, and we can find one for a reasonable price). At least it'll provide people with a good comparison.

 

The HD800S is the stock HD800 without that peak in the treble.

A modified HD800 can be end-game good. @Serious made his HD800M sound like nothing else.

as i am super paranoid of modding a $1K+ headphone, i would welcome the opportunity to sample Sennheiser's "fix."

 

Resurrecting this. I plan to sell my work setup which will give me a little cash to play with.

I'm actually interested in a stock HD800 though, to get a baseline. Do any of those even exist around here?

If anyone has one they can loan me for a week, I'd be eternally grateful.

(or, could SBAF hold Axel Grell hostage until we get a sponsored by Sennheiser tour of the the HD800, HD800S and the HD820, with the amp/dac of their choice.)

 

it’s a very unobtrusive mod, it’s just putting stuff inside the ear cups. Very safe. There’s still always a protective loose weave thread grill over the driver. Nothing to be worried about. Unless the mod has changed, you’d have to be real clumsy to mess them up.

 

Listened to the HD800S the other day on a weird WA5 setup. My previous experience was for a short while at canjam. Both experiences had the same thoughts.
Neutered HD800, no peak but no fine detail(soundstage queues) as well, pushed mid bass that sounds good to the untrained ear but still far from a reference, HD800 low end is leaner but better controlled with sharp focus. Far more rewarding to tame the HD800 than to endure the tamed version.
