Weird. I've always been able to play music from a computer CD drive without any problems.

(Except during my Firewire-Linux-Hell days, of course, when I couldn't play music reliably off anything. Not even the score.)

I have found that early Kernels around 4.9 have problems dealing correctly with USB audio. They seemed to have settled down around 4.9.0.7, and perfectly stable again like they use to be after 4.9.0.8. I'm not sure which Kernel Ubuntu is using, but you might want to try a different distro that uses a different kernel. But I had some of the same frustrations for a better part of a year, and I started just using a raspberry pi for USB audio which I have had great results with. Having said that, my linux box is now stable with USB audio like it was back in the days of 3.x kernels. You can use "uname -r" at the command line to determine which kernel you are using.

Zombie thread, but I cannot get the Schiit Hel to even show up as an audio device on my Linux machine (Manjaro). Works great with my Android phone tho! And I have been able to get more than a few other USB DACs to work on this machine.

I was curious if folks running the new Unison USB could chime in on their Linux experience.

EDIT: Tried plugging in to my Ubuntu box, same results

The Hel is not a Unison device.

Try it with an external power supply. And see if shows up in the Alsamixer.

I understand. Given that this is a CMedia device, I wondered if people were getting better luck with the Unison devices.

And I do have the external PSU. Nothing detected in Alsamixer.

I mean, I had Unison working on my Pi into my Bifrost, no problem. Even the 1st gen test cards that were sent out worked that way.

I would just make sure your Linux distro supports UAC2.

I never had any trouble getting gen5 usb working on ubuntu or arch, I only just got my unison upgrade back and hadn't plugged it in via usb on anything but my Mac, I can try plugging it into the linux boxes later to make sure it works there.

My Ubuntu laptop finds my Jot MB (non Unison) without any need for additional drivers. lsusb -v shows it as a CMedia device with Schiit as the product and manufacturer.

Looks like Hel has one USB port for power and one for data. If you have any external USB hubs or anything in the picture I'd remove them. Other than that, no idea.

My Eitr (Gen 5 USB) works just fine with Fedora 32. I also tried my Fulla 3 (Gen 2 USB???) with external 5V phone charger plugged in. No issues.

Wanted to chime in and say I plugged it in the other day and it works perfectly. Must have been a bad cable.
