Wow! There is so much to learn about tuberolling. Are all the variants of the 6sn7 okay to use in Freya?
Newbie here! (You knew that :) )

    Yes. All 6SN7s are fine.

I've only tried 6sn7 in my SET amp, but I've found the Psvane cv181-t mkii are amazing.
A bit bright to start, but they warm up after burn in. Exceptional resolution compared to most of my other 6sn7 and variants.

I am curious if there are any issues using the tubes or they plug and play?

The "ST" shape of the tube might come into contact with the Freya case.
Unfortunately Schiit decided to mount the sockets well below the Freya case, making "ST" tubes an issue.

I've read on head-fi it's 50/50 if you get them to fit, or you're guaranteed a fit with these socket savers.

As far as electric parameters, they are exactly 6SN7, no idea why Psvane calls them CV181.
They will work no issues with Freya.

Thank you for answering so quickly. The tubes that were supplied with the Freya are a little noisy in gain mode. I've purchased a couple of Tung-Sol 6SN7 made in Russia which solved the noise problem but I perceive a slight loss of dynamics and clarity in the highs. I reinstalled the stock tube until I find something better.

Hello, my first post here. \/
Just received a Freya & trying to decide on mode - jfet buffer is very transparent and running tubes - new matched tung-sols on gain side, stock on following. I am leaning towards tube mode as best sound w/rest of my gear & dipole speakers. What about other new Freya owners?

I got some electro harmonix tubes, and the gain over stock tubes seems higher. JFET and passive, gain-wise, are much, much lower. I tend to run tube buffer, just because I'm using replaygain w/ Roon, which in the non-tube modes is just too low. I don't think the active monitors I'm using at the moment can really articulate a SQ difference. Once Vidar is out, I will hook up my LS50s and try to evaluate the difference.
I think your assessment lines up with most of what I've read here.

Tube mode with solid state amp, for sure.
    Love my stock tubes.

I'm still waiting for Freya to start shipping, back ordered... but i had been on the hunt for some tubes in the meant time... i ended up getting 4 Sylvania VT-231's at a very good price... anyone have experience with them? From everything i've read in a couple different 6sn7 threads is that they are very good tubes.

I can't promise they'll sound the same in every situation, but they're pretty neutral and on the wider, airier side of things. Not as dynamically aggressive or warm and thick as some other 6SN7s. They are very good overall but may not synergize with certain amps and personal tastes.

What are some of your top choices for 6SN7s?

all current owners of EC Super 7 need not answer such tube questions in order to keep our back stock protected from higher prices.
    ;)
(this was a joke since Hands and I own the same amp and similar tubes. perhaps)

Would depend on the amp and your tastes. Or, if not satisfied with your current tubes, why, and what sort of sound you're looking for in comparison.

Ill be pairing Gungnir Multibit/freya/jot/hd650km to start with... Will be interesting pairing with a more neutral tube like the sylvania vt-231...but i would like to try something that adds some of that lovely tube warmth, sweet mids while still retaining some speed and tight bass... Might be too much to ask for from one tube...but any suggestions along those lines would be welcome...want to pick up at least one more pair to try out in the gain stage as im led to believe that is were the largest change will be noticed with rolling. Thanks im advance!

That's too much to ask. There are some warmer or lusher 6SN7s, but they don't tend to have tight bass. The ones I think you are describing tend to be unobtainium these days:

    Brimar
    Pope
    Mullard
    RCA VT-231 Grey Glass
    RCA 5692

I think the RCA 5692 are the ones you might be looking for with the balance of your specified attributes. The British or Euro tubes tend to be smoother. I will say no more as I have already revealed too much.

is it worth rolling the cathode follower tubes as well or just the gain stage?
