I detect a hint of sarcasm.

As is the case with the HD 800 I would suspect it to be with the HD 700 as well.

No, I haven't heard the HD 700, but I like what I read about the comfort and assumed the sonic deficiencies were down to the driver. To be honest I'm happy with my HD 650 - which is why I'm fairly ignorant of the HD 700 - but if there was a model that produced the same but in bigger quantities I'd have jumped at it.

Fair play. Again, I did not know that.

The 650 sounds fine from these sources. Even if it didn't, the 600 series is for enthusiasts. People who insist on driving a $500 improperly should just get the 599. There was no need to dumb down the 650.

Reading between the lines it seemed Tyll was hurting. Sennheiser could have done so much better.

I agree. After the HD700 Sennheiser could have learnt and improved. They release the HD660S for about 150 to 200 Dollars/Euros (retail!) more than the HD600 and HD650. The HD660S did not sound better for the money when I tried them in Berlin. It sounded "meh" and when that happens a Koss PortraPro is better.

P.S. I finally had time to finish reading Tyll's review. That was a sad read...

Massdrop has done an HD 700 drop, about a year ago. If they had surplus 700 drivers, they could just do another drop.

I don't see anything wrong with continuing to produce headphones that have stood the test of time. Sennheiser has plenty of other headphones for the non-enthusiast/portable use. They did not have to replace the HD650 to add another one.

Bummer. But Senn will always have my gratitude. If an artist can produce just one great book, album, film, etc. then that is something extraordinary. Sennheiser has already delivered.

Yeah, and sell another 244 HD700s while sitting on 4,000 drivers?

Has the 650 already been axed? In that case hopefully 650's the legacy will live on in 6XX for ever.

@Arun Kumar Word from the Force said it has been discontinued. So the best bet for brand new HD650 is HD6XX

The listed replacement earpads for HD660S are the same as for HD650 (part 050635).

The 700 driver should be easier to manufacture given that the stainless steel mesh used for damping has much lower tolerances than the paper stuff meaning they won't have to discard as many transducers that don't fit the target. In addition the lower impedance coil suggests a thicker wire diameter which again is easier to work with (also cheaper).
However, they are still making the 600 which has a transducer that is pretty much identical to the 650.
Who started the rumor that the 650 is going to be discontinued? I think it's humbug.

They probably just wanted to have a product in the HD 6XX line that comes with a symmetrical cable as this seems to be the trend with Sennheiser's recent offerings in the "High-End" segment (see HD 800 S and IE 800 S). In turn they decided to use the newer (and probably better) part to give people a reason to buy the same headphone another time and for the above mentioned.
Them simply wanting to get rid of 700 drivers is unlikely. The 700 has been out for 5 years (and is still selling). Sennheiser probably knows how to manufacture according to demand. They move 640*10^6€ every year. It's not some random boutique brand.

I couldn't find pads for the 660S on the UK site. It's weird they'd be the same part number if people are saying they're physically different. Maybe the original 650 pads are gone & they're now supplying the 660S pads for 650 owners?

I'm connected to the firm running UK Sennheiser Spares; the contract is ending soon and control is reverting back to Sennheiser proper. In the meantime, I don't think the UK site will be updated with the HD660S model. HD600/650 pads have been sold with part code 050635 for some years, and there is no sign of this stock being tweaked. Sennheiser would bring out pads under a new part code if this was so, and then display that new code/those pads within the HD600/650 parts listings on their internal parts system.
