Can't you just flip one of the plugs going into the headphones?

I can, but isn't one for the left channel and one for the right?

Yeah. But isn't it a phase issue? So you just want to flip + and - of one side? Try it.

Pins are different sizes on HD650 cup connectors. Don't flip one side.

The pins and receivers aren't actually the same size. You might be able to jam it in, but I wouldn't recommend it.

    Firstly,
I want to thank each and every one of you for your suggestions and help, I sincerely appreciate it. The HD650 are one of my favorite headphones and I know they are not supposed to sound like this. I appreciate everyone taking the time to help me find a solution.

Are you sure? Mine look the same size and I think they go in either way. Let me check

They ABSOLUTELY fit only one way by design. You can force them in the wrong side but that is a mistake.

Uh... I forced mine in the wrong way before. I just checked, they were the wrong way.

Can you not return for replacement or repair? It sounds like he might have just made a mistake, and, especially as you are a regular customer, he might just put the thing right for you. Also, if you are not happy with checking continuity and pin-outs, I suspect you have some colleagues who do it with their eyes shut.
But when you absolutely have to listen with your head in the three inches between two cupboards, something has to suffer ;)

I have two pairs of HD650 at the moment. The older, more tired set has 55xxx serial number, and the fresher pair is around 112xxx. I've been thinking of modding for a while and had some idle time this afternoon so I did the foam removal and coin mods on the older pair. Left the spider cage intact for now, and did not apply any Dynamat just yet. I like what these mods have done to the 650 - it is more a sharper (in the good sense), more focussed, more dynamic and more detailed version of the original. I definitely prefer the modded pair despite having much older earpads. But it also has a slight echoey character now. Does the Dynamat mod bring that back in check?

I'm interested in the pads also if anyone has comments having used them, that would be appreciated.

Do you still have a 650? Last I heard, you were sending yours back.

I’m writing this just to help connect this thread to @Bill-P advice on the Dekoni pads here

In my experience, it's the removal of the spider cage that most reduces that "echoey" resonance, even before applying Dynamat.

In my case, when I did that, soggy bass swamped everything. I ended up fixing a fine mesh over the hole with rubber cement to just dial it back down again (as I seemed to have thrown the foam away, grrr). The result sounded nice, though.
