Just got @Bigferret 's HD-650 from Fed-Ex today, just plugged em in less than ten minutes ago, so nothing really big so far. They're definitely not as WOW as the X00 that came in a while back, but I'm liking them so far. Midrange is more pronounced than my other cans, texture in the music, like toms and pianos moving the foot pedals are felt as well as heard. Kinda like the Grados, I feel more pressure from the soundwave than with the planar HE-500. Not thumpy like the X00, everything feels professionally restrained. I'll get some more time on these and come back with more impressions.

What are you driving them with, BTW?

Also, give yourself a good break from the THX00 before going to the HD650. The extra bass and treble will throw you off.

Just the Carbon, only single ended since I don't have a balanced cable for em. I've been listening to the HE-500s for a few nights, haven't got the X00 out for a bit.

I'm hearing stuff in Goodbye Pork Pie Hat that I didn't pick up before. Mostly little things like even smaller creaking of chairs and breaths. I like it.

How is the Woo Audio WA6 SE with HD600/HD650?
Its a used pair for sale here.
Is it better then Schiit's offerings?

From what I've got from others impressions, Woo gear is really tubey, plays well with your tastes if you like warmth and such, while Schiit's Valhalla is consistently called neutral and a bit 'dry'.

Woo's WA6 SE is the least tubey and distorted of all their amps. It's actually one of my favorites. There's good latitude to get different sounds via tube rolling. I'd snag one if you can get one for cheap.

For me, equipment that 'wows' on first listen always seems to get relegated to the cupboard and eventually sold. HD650 was more of a slow burn, it renders subtleties in music and has a tonal balance that I am yet to tire of.

You'd probably like a fully loaded Crack + Speedball then, too. If you're lucky, you can find a good used one modded with better film output caps, a better volume pot or stepped attenuator, and maybe even a PSU choke if you're lucky (the latter being a cheap addition but a tight fit).

That's definitely what started getting to me, and what the major difference was when switching to the X00. The HD-650 just sounds natural, and it wasn't something that I really noticed, it just crept up as I got into the music.

The HD 650 took many auditions, a realization that the older ones were substantially worse than the newer ones, and an AB with the current 600 to convince me to order it undiscounted for $500 from Amazon with one day shipping. Their treble on a good solid state amp isn't even relatively dark when you consider just how ridiculously bright most headphones are compared to speakers.

Not that I have perfectly neutral speakers, nor an ideal room setup, but the HD650, sometimes the HD600 too, are the closest I've heard to what decent speakers I have heard...FWIW.

BioniclePhile, haven't heard the Liquid Carbon myself, but the more things you plug your HD650 into, the more you'll realize what they're capable of. Or, rather, what the entire audio chain is capable of. Or not capable of. If you're not smitten with the LC pairing, eventually you'll find something that does the trick.

Just be careful, because it might be a multi-thousand dollar Eddie Current, Cavalli, DNA, or other similar amp. ;)

Then keep the TH-X00 around for when you want something else. They make a good pair if you have an inner basshead, IMO.

    Got my HD650's today.
So far I have to say I prefer the HD600. They sound more open and clear.
I dont belive in burn in, so I doubt the HD650's will change much at all.
The mid bass makes it sound much less clear to me

You will probably enjoy the coin and foam removal mods, add in the Dynamat and you'll probably be golden. Those do exactly what you're mentioning, opening it up and giving it more clarity. Also the bass, while being more prominent, also seems more controlled. A very big improvement in my experience.

Isent the latest rev HD650's bass more similar to HD600 tho?
Might aswell return them for HD600 instead of modding, not a fan of mods that are not easly reversible.
