I've never really liked the HD650, though I've only heard the old model. I own a 10 year old HD600 and love it a ton. I've never considered it flat or neutral, but rather warm.

Try the new, stiffer pads. They reduce the mid-bass and lower-midrange hump of every can in the line.

A new production (silver driver) "modded" HD650 sounds so much better than any "stock" iterations of HD600 or HD650.

I have just finished Mod 1 (Removing the foam from behind the driver) and Mod 2 (Cutting Quarter Size Hole) and I have to say that the SQ has improved a lot.
Cutting the Quarter Size hole helped a lot. The HD 650s sound much more alive now!

Just need some Mod to improve the bass response! What is the scientific approach to this?

You might get more bass from letting the silver mesh "breathe" less. Maybe. I haven't tested it much myself.

You can add felt in front of the driver to increase the bass. You will also loose more treble because of this. I suggest cutting a dime size hole right where the driver sits to help alleviate this.

What about the stock HD650 an classic music? Many people say it's too dark but with all the 650 love there is a sbaf are there any poeple here who listen mainly to classical music with the Senns?

The mods just add that little extra sparkle that is needed. I found the stock HD 650 just a little too "tame".
Than again maybe it might be just my imagination ….

I found more bass with hm5 pads. You'll need the rings from an old pair of stock pads. Warning...it's a real bitch to get the pads to snap in place. You'll have to be very careful not to "dent" the grills while trying to pop the pads in place.

    Which HM5 Pad though?
    1) Velour/Fake Leather/Combination of both
    2) Angled or Straight?

Sorry - One more question - Why do I need the rings from an old stock pair?
How do those replacement pads work exactly ….

Rings from the stock pads (old beater pair) are needed to use are the base that will allow you to lock the hm5 pads in place. Just as you would the stock pads. Because Sennheiser uses this propriety locking system, you'll need those old rings to lock the new hm5 pads in place. Hope that makes more sense.

I listen to classical/orchestral 75% of the time and use the HD650 stock. At times I could use a touch more air or wider soundstage like the HD800 had (possibly artificially so?), but for the most part, I love it. Everything has heft and a beautiful tonality. I can stand overly thin sound. I still don't understand the whole polite/tame thing with these. Any more excitement and I wouldn't be able to listen to them as much as I do (4-6 hours a day). But I have sensitive ears, so that might be the difference right there - Grados sound like nails in a blender to me. In my pursuit of a "better" headphone, I had an in home audition/ownership of the LCD2.2, Beyer T1 and DT660 (was recommended for classical), HD800, HE-5LE, HE-500, HE-6, Denon 2/5/7000, Fostex TH900, and heard countless others at meets, and I always came back to the HD650. Only headphone I would consider again is the HD800(S) modded.

I've been reluctant to mod my 650 other than the hm5 pads. I just enjoy the sound of them stock. But now that I've had these for a while I guess it's time to try out the mods.

Anyone know the best place to buy replacement hd650 pads? My left one just plops out on its own, and the plastic ring looks slightly curved so I'm assuming imthey need replacing!

Sennheiser USA is out of stock ($42.80) at this link. However, headphone.com shows them in stock for $69.

Thanks man! I wonder why there's such a price hike between the two places. Might hunt for something cheaper than 70 but ill shell out if I have to!
